One of my buddies was telling me that a lightweight flywheel with a turbo setup is not good because it makes it harder for the turbo to spool up? I am just wondering if this was true or not because if so I will sell the flywheel and put the money towards some racing seats. Thanks in advance!

tell him to NOT drink the bong water next time.
The flywheel will help the engine rev faster thus helping it spool faster..
the only point a flywheel might give you trouble is launching due to the less rotational mass of the motor so it might bog a little but then again if youre a decent driver this wouldnt hrut

Also, You're going to lose more RPMs inbetween shifts, which depending on the size of your turbo could mean your turbo does have some spooling in the next gear. That could be what he meant.
A lighter flywheel with a turbo setup is not going to hurt spool times, as said above, the turbo will spool faster because of it. I went from a 15lb flywheel to a 12lb flywheel and even with a 3lb decrease, I noticed a difference in the spool time.
Alright. I think that could have been what he meant. I guess I will just save up now and get a stage 2 clutch and try and install the thing. Thanks!

sorry to bring an old post back from the dead....
BUT
Who all has a lightened flywheel and boost on their Ecotec? How bad do the revs drop between shifts? If I have a short throw how much will this affect me? What weight would be the "middle of the road?" Suggestions on where to buy are very welcome!! I am mostly about the 1/4 mile however it is also my daily driver. Also I have a Spec Stage 3 to put in with it. My hp goal is about 250-275 or what ever will get me into the 13s at my alt... Home is Albuquerque, NM track elevation is around 5400 feet.
Thanks a bunch.

LOL join the altitude club it sucks. But ya crazy that you brought my old post up because I am recently back on the topic. I am a pretty quick shifter so I am not to worried about the rpm drop between shifts. I am wondering about how it will affect my launches on the drag strip?

it wont.
turbo + lightweight flywheel = fine
My car actually revs up between shifts, with my flywheel...... its scary how fast the engine revs with the flywheel, balance shaft delete, and a under drive pulley.

I have heard mixed things. How much would you say it took off your times SpeedRacerZ? I need anything I can get here with out altitude. I also have some high 60' times I need to lower LOL.

I dont have the turbo back on my car yet, but our drag car is sporting the Spec flywheel and a turbo....... dont have a before and after, since its been on there since day one...... but its pretty solid.
BUT on my brother's Z, with nothing changed other then the flywheel and a clutch, he dropped .5 off his 1/4 mile time. Granted, it wasnt the same day, but it was near same conditions...... and from consistant 15.5's to 15.0's the next time out....... thats a decent change.
There are plenty of Evo's, DSM's, other turbo cars that run aftermarket lightweight flywheels, with positive results.
