Charge piping?
Saturday, August 12, 2006 6:36 PM
Has anybody had any luck with getting a tubing + couplers + clamps "kit" on ebay and having enough to finish the job on there J? I just want to know before I drop good money on something that is too generic to work.

the ebay kit is what i just ordered, it will be here next week, i can let you know, you just have to weld a flange on for your BOV.

The problem with the tubing at an exaust shop is it will probably be compression bent which ill make kinks which is BAD and it will be steel or stainless which weighs a TON

Yeah I really dont like the idea of an exhaust shop doing it. Let me know what you can do with it spyder.

it all depends on the tools they are working with. they do some nice mandrel bends at the one here....

hey guys,,,

yes ebay does wonders but also definately has its "junk" on there and usually more of that than good quality products. i recommend doing the job yourself and ordering aluminized piping from summit or any other performance part company that sells it. be ready to spend some time making your tubing. i just made mine this summer and it came out awesome although i spend ALOT of time on it. if you do buy a kit on ebay dont expect it to just bolt right up cause it wont. sellers will list them as kits for cavaliers and sunfires but they are not. the only company that sells a pre-bent intercooler piiping kit for j's is hahn and jtuners i think so good luck. also i have seen alot of the ebay piping kits wether they were supposedly the cavy kits or universal ones, they use cheap silicone couplers in their kits. good luck

i dk id rather have some alumanized piping rather than just regular aluminum cuz i dk the thought if hitting it on something and having it crack or bend real quick doesnt really appeal to me...........

Well I have a showcar so hopefully i wont be hitting the IC piping on anything lol, Ill be using an ebay kit, TIGing what connections I can and using couplers and T-Bolts where I cant. The kit should come tommorow and I plan to re install it tonight.

what do you mean by aluminized? do you mean chrome plated metal?

Re: Charge piping?

aluminum plated steel usually.... its called aluminized steel its suppose to help against stains and rust and stuff, its usually more money for it...

i got regular steel pipes by mistake, but i am going to be getting them powder coated, so it wont matter either way

OK so where to go for some aluminized steel?
I dont want to sound like an a$$ but I dont have $900.00 to spend on just an intercooler kit like the one from jtuners....I think that is pretty ridiculous prices but I've also never plumbed an intercooler before so I might be surprized how much it costs but on first glance I think it would only cost about half that. I'd like to know some input if I'm wrong.

Aluminizde steel is cheaper then stainless but more then steel. Aluminized steel is actually a mixture of steel and aluminum to make it lighter then steel and stronger then aluminum. IT DOES RUST!!! just not as fast as steel would. if you want to do it cheap ... go to www.jegs.com click on the "exhaust" icon on the left side of the screen, and click on "exhaust tubing" , then click on "Hooker headers/Dynomax Exhaust Tube Mandrel Bends"

it will give you a variety of aluminized steel or mild steel (same thing different name). Im making a custom intake and it requires a total of 6 "U" bends and the price with out shipping is around $110 Granted its the smaller sizes but its an amazing price.

If you do it this way it might cost 200 or 250 for the tubing + powder coating/ paint (so you dont have to the it all over again down the line) + how ever much it will cost for you to have some one weld it all up nicly (if your not comfortable with doing it your self). So possibly your looking at around 300-400. to me thats nothing!

If you want to get the turbo install right away you should have just bought a kit and said ok i install it all pre made and im good to rock the kit! but if you make a custom kit be prepaired to spend more then a weekend on doing it! and if you drive your car alot ... I would start with mounting the intercooler, and start with soem charge pipes ... slowly working your way to the turbo and intake. then when its all around there ... mount the turbo and have everything set up so you can connect the turbo and the charge pipes and let her fly!

hope this helps.

read this..... trust me

ok I dont know what has been said so this may come off ass reptitve or contradictive. I bought the ebay kit and I will never do it again.
for starters there aluminum. yeah there nice and pretty but try welding them.

next is the couplers. I have riped three and blown off about ummmm....alot. you have know idea how rediculos it is having to fix it everyday.

now there not all bad, but you have to get the ones that are of good grade. ones that have the threading in them.

just trust me stay away from the cheap stuff and use ss pipes.

I bought the ebay POLISHED aluminum Kit, i love it, worked GREAT, as far as welding if you can half ass TIG aluminum then you can weld this stuff no problem, I hve 2 welded pipes and the BOV flange is welded on, the pipe is soft, but I like it, and i ave yet to feel it get warm(excusing th fact I have a blown headgasket lol)

I say its great for 125! as far as the couplers coming lose, just put some 40gritt on a mouse sander and scuff about 1/2" of the ends of them, I havent nearly had a problem sience, Im runnign 2.5" piping and I needed 3 2.5 to 2" reducers to go to My IC outlets and the TB

its not the piping kit you have to worry about its about how much you can imagine it in your head and physically cut the piping and make everything fit. How innovative are you? If you think you can do it its gonna happen regardless. I think they look nice but make sure you get t clamps. The worst thing to have happen is poping couplers every other stop light. Spend the money on the clamps and the tubing from those kits are light and they wont rust easily. Id say go with it. I personally prefer the least amount of couplers and have everything welded but thats just my 2 cents

If you want to i can get you some good prices on IC piping. Let me know what way you want to route your pipes and i can either get you the mandrel bends to do it yourself for fairly cheap or if youd like i could even make the piping kit for you. Just pm me if you need any help.

ok, bottom line, if you are going to order the ebay aluminum kits, you only buy them for the aluminum piping. everything else that it comes with you throw away. The reason why you use the aluminum is so its lighter, doesn't keep heat like steel and mild steel and welding is easy as long as ur not tryin to mig or flux it. The couplers are rubber and blow apart so just throw them out. The clamps are just worm feeds so you can keep them and just use them for other projects, definately not to keep couplers connected to charge pipes. They are actually a pretty good deal if you are just lookin to get aluminum mandrel bends, but you have to realize that in the first place.
