IM NOT LOOKING TO START A BATTLE BETWEEN WHAT MOTOR IS BETTER AND SUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
with that being said here is my dilemma....
i currently have my 2002 2.4 5spd with the gm s/c but im gonna be turboing it and will be building a motor
but i also have been given a line on all the parts needed for an eco swap for almost free.
with that being said gm has also given up on the quad 4 based motors and is on the "eco" bandwagon
if i go with the 2.4 its best to do the oil pump swap and such on it and i have the support mods already to help make more hp on a boosted 2.4 ie:62mm tb,2.3 intake manifold and the spec stage 3 clutch with lightweight flywheel
if i went with the eco i would want to buy the tb i would need a clutch for sure and stuff like that.
the eco is now what gm is basing R&D into as well as other companies and looks like in the long run the eco might be better but im looking into $ efficiency and yes i know speed costs $ as well
another thing im sorta concerned about is the fact that the eco ecu doesnt want to keep an ideal boost air/fuel ratio and fights changes
i want to make at least 350whp/350wtq as well but want to try to hit 400+whp with race fuel and high boost
looking for opinions/ideas
im sorry about the read and my rant
thanks for your time
scott
well talk to boosted2point4..he got in that range with his 2.4....the eco is capable of that number as well..but i think both engines are going to need about the same amount of mods to get there...correct me if im wrong..phil
i have already talked to brandon (boosted2point4)/jeremy(skilz1079) and brian(speedracerz) and from the collaboration of those 3 i have a build sheet for a 2.4
nice thing bout the eco is that its roughly 70lbs lighter.
stick with the 2.4 and this is coming from an eco owner. Personally if you are setup for boost on your car and all your doing is a rebuild and turbo kit id stick with the 2.4. you could possibly bore it get a decent amount more of displacement to spool a larger turbo. Your also gonna be saving yourself a little hassle. You have the ability to run hpt and if you have a large enough turbo 400+ hp should be no problem at all. the eco is nice and if you have the money it can be really built but so can the 2.4. If you can do the swap for cheap like real cheap why not. IF you were to do the swap you could build the eco out of the car and take your time and get everything done right. I dont know how much your looking to spend but for the eco you could resleeve the block with darton sleeves bore it to 90mm get the eagle crank (found em for like 800 bucks) forged pistons, patriot head, comp cams turbo cams, hpt, gt35r and your looking at mad hp. But i dont know your budget. I thought mine was large until college bills started coming in then my build went away
good luck. If your looking for any links to parts i have them all saved. You can email me if interested slmd2k3@hotmail.com good luck man

for the eco build i had in mind going this way:
8.9:1 pistons
eagle rods
the patriot head with comp cams turbo grind
hpt is readily available and a knowledgable tuner close by
i was looking probably at the gt30 more so then the gt35
i wasnt going to go as far as the darton sleeves though
the eco would be getting built along with some tranny work then the motor/tranny would be together and i would drive up to my buddy's shop and do it all.
i was gonna build the motor and such, break it in and diagnose any problems if they arise then install the turbo tune it and let it buck
whatever man its your vehicle and im stoked to see another j ready for the big leagues i know the 2.4 supercharged motor is sweet but it lacks in the 300+ region. Plus i think you'll like the sound of hte gt30r spooling more than a supercharger whine
just opinion tho you may be in love with your whine.
still on the eco that is definately a good built no problem hitting 350hp+ Keep us posted man

the whine is nice i do agree but i as stated i will gladly get rid of it for hearing the turbo spool and then bov going off, and having more power then the gm s/c can give out. i wish the 2.4 s/c was the m62 but o wells
another good thing is that i have some $ cause i have an interested buyer in my current 2.4 setup already so building the motor will cost some but not totally coming out of my pocket due to selling my setup
thanks for the insight and not flaming, i do try to research and figure stuff out myself, and i do know its my car just looking for some options and different views from different people
I think for your goals you have the 2.4 would be a good choice, and seeing how you have a few parts for it already. I'm also looking at it in the money aspect. The Ecotec is a great motor, and holds boost well (no doubting that), but for your goals a big part of it will be tuning. Now you can spend the cahs and get the hahn's kit, and portfueler and have no issues, but that is a pretty penny as well, but great product. 2.4's can use the super charger program (which you already have on your ECU), and HPT to tune it with to get the numbers you want. HPT can be used on the Ecotec's as well, but maybe with a little more playing with it as well. My point is in looking at money, either motor would have to be built, turbo stuff bought, but then how do you go about tuning of either. The currently best way for a Ecotec I feel is the PortFueler set-up. For the 2.4 HPT. HPT is much less than the portfueler set-up, as well you have to still swpa to a Ecotec and make the car run as one.
My comments were in no way saying the Ecotec is not as good as the 2.4. They are both great motors, and thanks to GM the Ecotec will go much further than the 2.4 will, but the 2.4 has not stopped going at the same time either.
FU Tuning
$ wise i will be spending the same amount all said and done. i wont be going with hahns kit though, i have a bunch of parts to turbo already.
i wont be keeping the s/c program as it will get deleted and totally redone using hp tuners as well so tuning im not worried about in that aspect.
the swap is easy for me as im a 00-02 car and a 2.4 to begin with and as stated i got the majority of the swap for free and other parts for less then $250 cdn. i was gonna build the eco motor/tranny and keep driving my 2.4 then go up to my buddy's shop as he has more tools and a hoist and do the swap.
im thinking in the long run cause GM has done so much R&D it would be a smart way to go
john, thanks for the input as its greatly appreciated

Changing the PE delay point gets rid of this bug, not a big deal once you have HPtuners. You don't need to run the eco GMSC reflash to get a good boost tune.
15.3 @ 89.97mph, 14's on the way?
