alternator problems after supercharging?

In the instructions I remember it mentioned how the alternator could have problems, has this actually happened to anyone? Should it be any kind of concern? Sorry was just thinking about it earlier so I thought I'd see if anything was posted about it and didn't see anything

The only part of the installation I can remember it mentioning any "troubles" with the alternator...are when it tells you to make all the connetions to the alternator at that point in time, or it'll be damn near impossible later when you put the rest of the charger on.

I don't remember it mentioning any other troubles.

i think with the eco charger that it spins the alternator in the other direction.

^ Yep

The alternator is spun in the opposite direction, but I don't think that should be that big of a deal. If it is, you can always replace it with a salvage yard part.

^^^^ exactly what he said

the 2.2 alt has the fan's that are set up to cool 1 way , once you put the s/c on , the fans will spin backwards

so in high heat enviorments , they recomend using the 2.0 s/c alt , which has the fans set up to cool it properly

and a added bounus is the alt is larger than the 2.2 alt , and i do recomend getting the 2.0 alt to started wire also , as its atleast twice the size of the 2.2 wire

It sometimes gets pretty hot here, and I have subs as well, I duno my cars been acting funny about starting lately and that jumped in my head, I'll have to look into it and find the 2.0 s/c alt if that is whats causing my problems

Thanks

Well, sometimes it just wont turn over, yesterday it took me 10trys to get it to turn over, usually only takes 2 or 3 when it does it, and recently I started hearing something at idle, its hard to explain, almost like a grinding noise, we were listening to it last night while going up to pep boys because my bf needed something for his car, when I explained to him what it had been doing he said its possible it could be the alternator, we going to look more into it this weekend. What else could it be? Kinda weird noise and problems starting...sometimes...Its completly random when it decides to do it but it all started a little after I supercharged it.

id check the voltage at the battery and make sure its charging with the engine running , should be atleast 13.5v at idle

also check the batt cables make sure they are tight

and for the bad news , check the connection at the alt and at the starter , make sure they are tight

it kinda sounds like something might have been left loose

on my g/fs cav we did the ss/sc-redline alt on hers , we live in phoenix , and during the summer we will have day time temps in the 110-125 range , the alt from GM is expensive at retail price , just over 400.00 , but it is a NEW part

you might be able to check with pep boys , autozone , checker , napa , and see if they offer a reman alt for the ss/sc-redline

Ok thanks I'll check the batt cables when I get out of school then check the rest this weekend since I don't have work, did the alt fit or did you have to do some mods to make it fit?

the alt fits like a glove , no mods required

How did you get around the pulley problem? The SS/Redline belts have 4 ribs, whereas our cars have 5 ribs. You'd have to swap everything, alt pulley, crank pulley, tensioner, and sc pulley...

That you are backwards on, ours are a 5 rib belt, the Cobalt is a 6 rib belt. The only pulley that would remain a problem would be the A/C pulley, as the crank pullley is a vailable aftermarket now, I think!

Marchi1 is correct admiral jedi , the cobalts are 6 and we are 5

and just like the s/c pulley's having 1 rib not used the alt is the same way

with the gm kit the a/c , alt and crank are left with 5 rib , but if you follow their instructions and use the cobalt alt then the crank and a/c are left at 5 rib
