Got a question for the guru's
Wednesday, December 06, 2006 6:10 AM
Alright so the other night I decided to take the dsm BOV from the hahn kit off my car and put a knockoff RFL on there. The car never pushed more than 5lbs of boost at any RPM, now with the different BOV the car is pushing 7 and even saw it hit 8 lbs right before I shifted. How would changing the BOV up the boost in my car, does it have anything to do with boost leak prior or present? I have never had any problems with not holding consistent boost before, even though it's only 5 lbs. Another question is if I am not at full throttle and only have a few lbs of boost built up and let off the gas or push in the clutch the BOV sounds like it sputters for a second and then releases. At full throttle it is one loud whoosh, but part throttle it sputters. I took apart the BOV and removed the spacer that was inside, and it did not change the noise. I am afraid of compressor surge or just anything going wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys
P.S.-It's an Eco

my bov sputters on part throttle too...

better bov holds boost better, thats prob why you see higher boost...

If the BOV is adjustable, lower the pressure, it shouldn't sputter if there was any pressure in the pipes.

So that sputter is ok acer? What blow off are you running? The only adjustment that I know off is to add/remove spacers, and like I said I removed the one spacer that was in there and it still does the same thing

yea mine sputter too! it's normal ! when there is not enough pressure in the charge pipe it get out slowly by the bov so this is why it is sputting like that! when you floor it and release it's normal the come out faster and make a stronger soudn too!

If you're only at part throttle at a couple lbs. of boost and low rpms, when you let off the gas the intake manifold doesn't drop to vacuum as quick as it would if you were at full throttle and high rpms. Therefore the BOV doesn't open as quick as it would during full throttle/boost. What you hear is light compressor surge before the valve opens and lets the rest of the pressure out. I have a Greddy Type S BOV and mine does the exact same thing.

You don't have your wastegate T'd off the same line as your BOV is do you? If so a leaking diaphragm could casue the boost increase. I know the knock off RFL's had that vacuum leak issue because sadly I have installed a few SSautochrome kits for people (though I strongly recommended against it.)

no the vacuum goes right to the intake manifold, but with the old dsm (hahn) bov, the boost would always drop to vacuum instantly, is that because the old bov leaked?

The old BOV would have nothing to do with the IM pressure. If it didn't cause some compressor surge like the new one, it's because it had a softer spring.
PS, I love my 1g DSM BOVs
