Wanna turbo this car of mine.....
Wednesday, December 13, 2006 10:24 PM
Ok ive been doing some research on it, and im really looking to turbo my new cavy.... its a 97' 2.2 ohv...... but i have a 98-02 2200 engine im gonna build, basicly because of the injector issue.

I'm really looking into the Hahn Stage II kit, but i havent really seen any LN2's with this kit. Id love to get input and see some pictures of it installed. I'm also looking to try to make over 200hp with it, at least enough to bring it into the 14's, maybe close to 13's if im lucky.

Just wanna get some recommendations on how I should build this motor, cause its getting rebuilt from the ground up.

i know nothing about turbos but i do the ln2

a 2200 is a great idea but you have to get a 98-99. if you get 00+ you'll have to convert ot class2 wiring and thats just a whole nother headache

My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again

yeah this 2200 is out of a 98 i think it is, but either way its a pre 2000

You need to get ahold of me for your HRC kit I know about the kit but not the motor. LOL.

ok, ill try to get ahold of you in the next couple days. The only dissapointment is that it comes with a log style manifold, and i really wanted a header like the one J-tuners had but i heard they dont produce that kit anymore.

Don't be fooled...the log manifold will hold well over 300HP...hell HRC even made 400+ on their log manifold on their Ecotec Sunfire.

If you really want a header I'm sure Full Race or someone would make you one...at an extreme price.

I have seen a couple 2200 turbo's. One of which was a Hahn kit. The Hahn car made 195whp. The other car never dynoed but was a 4 sped auto and ran 14.6 with stock motor. Also you can use a 2000+ 2200 in a pre 2000 car. You use the pre 2000 engine bay harness and wire in the 2200 injector harness. I have done this swap into a 97. Car runs great. I think you could push a 2200 with a great tune to the 13's, but how long the motor will last not sure. For the money I would put together a kit yourself.

Alright, here's my opinion:
The Hahn kit is alright, other than some 'mistakes' in the instructions (vacuum line routing that is less than ideal), which can be easily fixed.
However, if you're going to build the engine, the Hahn kit gives you limited upgrade paths, the biggest problem being the Mitsubishi turbos.
You may be able to find out who made the manifolds for JTuners, I doubt they care anymore since they no longer sell them.
I agree with John, put together our own kit... this will allow you to take advantage of HPT now that it's out, and it will let you pick the turbo best suited to your needs. Now that parts are more readily availible, piecing together a decent setup is a breeze.
As far as building the engine, all you need to know is: ARP headstuds, Cometic gasket, Clevite77 bearings, Eagle rods, forged pistons of your liking, and a fresh hone. I'd be willing to bet that alone would be good to 300whp minimum.

hmm..... i was even thinking a cam while i was at it with some work to the valvetrain to

only thing is im pretty knowledgable on the 2200 itself and building them, but im pretty new to the whole aspect of forced induction with them.

I wanna run a good amount of boost and have it still be reliable. So im pretty new at how i should build this thing to handle it

My 2200 dynoed 167whp and 189lbs. on 5 psi. (misfiring too cause my Msd was acting up) then i turned it up to 9-10 and was around 230hp, and 240lbs
I was high to mid 13s when i got rid of it.

There is good power to be made with the 2200, it just takes a little more squeezing. lol

im a sucker for pushrods so i wanna do up the 2200. Ive been working on them for many years and i just wanna take it to the next level with one of them.

But not enough to know there is no valvetrain upgrade availible (other than basic rockers)...

i meant as in rebuilding them

but ive seen sites where they sell oversized valves, stronger springs, pushrods, roller rockers, cams, etc.... or are they pretty much discontinued now?

cams - regrind of your choice - crane, comp, crower, whatever
rockers - any narrow-bodied small blocks' will do
pushrods - howell sells some from Crane, but I'd rather measure myself for best fit
oversized valves - SI valves, can be had through Karo as well
stronger springs - you're SOL (JBPs are NOT good for the 2200, even though they will still sell them)
Lift is also limited by retainer to guide clearance... ~.480" or something like that

There are ways to get larger springs in there, but you're either going to need some major machining or a custom valve cover and valves
Just run the stock valvetrain, it's fine as it is as long as you keep a mild cam and stock rev limiter. Just use boost for power, the bottom end is pretty sturdy.

I'm with Notec. As a general rule, the stock bottom endseems to be plenty sturdy for say 200whp. Some make more, some have blown up on less. Only thing I'd realy worry about is the top ring lands, and that won't be an issue as long as you keep the fuel and timing in check. If it's a high mileage engine, I'd freshen it up with new rings and what not, but other than that you'll be fine.

And you CAN use a 97 engine, and still take care of the injector problem. Plenty of myself have done topfeed conversions using a 2200 rail and harness, I myself am jsut about done with the mock-up of mine. It's easier than you'd think.

Dammit I need an edit button. What I meant was plenty of us have done topfeed conversions.

really, because id prefer to use a 95-97 2.2...... so how do i go about converting to top feed?

Re: Wanna turbo this car of mine.....

look through the top-feed threads.
Here's a starting point which pretty much spells it out:
