Any definite way to determine a turbo is ball bearing?
Sunday, February 25, 2007 12:38 PM
I bought a used Turbonetics T04B Super S trim turbo which is supposivly has been upgraded to ceramic ball bearing..Is there any way to tell without taking it apart and having to have it rebalanced? I know if you spin the shaft on a BB turbo it will spin longer than a traditional, on mine it hasnt been used for quite a while so it doenst spin like a ball bearing turbo as it probably hasnt seen oil in a long time..

Anything I can do to be sure without taking it apart?

I had a very experienced guy try that and he couldnt hear anything but he still wasnt going to say it isnt a Ball Bearing.

most ball bearing turbos are water and oil cooled, maybe that helps

looking up a S/N does too

No unless you take it apart there is no way to be sure unless there is a sn on the center bearing housing which there probably isnt. Unless someone has a receipt for the upgraded housing i would just assume it does not.

I have a big dual ball bearing turbo sitting next to me right now, you can't hear any bearings when you spin it.

Yeah, if you hear the bearings from your turbo you got problems. Take it apart and look theres not that much too it. If I bought a used turbo i would want to check out the bearings and fins anyway .
