0.48 to 0.63 housing differences
Wednesday, February 28, 2007 2:01 PM
I am curious what markings (if no casting number) how I can tell what size turbine I have... the issue I have is I believe I was shipped a 0.48 a/r turbine housing incorrectly and I am trying to figure out if I should order a 0.63... I have a 0.63 a/r one on my counter but it doesn't bolt to my downpipe.. so what should I look for or compare? need some educated answers here, becuase I know the external size is identical. thanks

-Garrett

externa; size should not be identical. If that is a .68 a/r housing on the other side, so is this one. The downpipe flange has nothing to do with the size of the turbine housing.

In this pic, i can't tell because its too dark but there should be a obvious difference in the inside size of the housing leading to the turbine wheel.

Are you sure there is no size anywhere in the casting? The only ones i've seen that didn't have and external stamp still had one on the inside near the manifold flange.

the casting numbers are ground off...

the housing are exactly the same (as they should be) with a measurement of the inside I get a calculated a/r of 0.50 on mine and 0.62 on the 0.63, so I must have measured right, now I need a 0.63 one

lol, I just want a larger turbine housing... stage 1 0.63.

so, after measuring again, this time likely within about 3-4 thou, I come up with mine being a 0.49 and the other as a 0.63... so yes the housing are identical, the "a" on a/r is the only thing that is bigger.. both use a stage 1 wheel 1.910 exducer on the turbine wheel.

Minion - I know the DP flange has nothing to do with it, but the 0.63 is different (in this case due to the car it came from) so I will have to modify my DP if I want to use that 5-bolt (which is also different than the "normal")

But from turbonetics a new 0.63 housing is 208 USD, so I will likely install this one tomorrow and have the DP modified to fit, I wll post up with results when I am done...

I also ported the internal gate on the 0.63, so I am going from a 20mm to a 29mm gate.. hopefully this will allow me to run a consistant 8psi with out creep up to 14-15psi (overboost warning/fuel cut)

.63's are so much nicer for us...

I think the top end gained from a .63 is much better then the spool time of a .48

I ended up using the 0.63 I had and modified my downpipe... it is too snowy to tell, but on the highway my backspin (stall) issue is solved, so that makes me happy. OH and I have no more boost creep.. sits right at 8psi.

way cheaper than ordering a new housing.

lol, when I get home from work I have 12 days to go "balls out" so I usually try and figure something out right aways.. I would have had one overnighted from Cali, but they were out of stock... usually I order stuff while I am at work so it is home waiting for me.
thanks though
