Remote Turbo. Is this possible?
Monday, March 12, 2007 3:20 PM
I am thinking of trying a Squire's remote turbo for my 02 Cavalier with the 2200 non ecotec. My question is this.

Is it possible to invert the throttle body and manifold so that the charge piping comes in from below?

The reason for this would be for simplifying pipe routing from the rear of the car and second is a very stealth look in the engine bay. No turbo under the hood and no obvious intake piping. Has anyone tryed this or is it even possible?

well think about it this way....u have pipe in the spot between the motor and firewall....think about how hot that pipe would get from the engine heat...and u would have to make sum kind of custom manifold....would cost a fortune.....

it is possible, but keep in mind the power you want to run, and the cost of a one of a kind TIG welded manifold, you would be looking likely over a grand just for an intake, unless you have some aluminum and a TIG welder, and some one with experience to weld it.

If you have ever been in an aftermarket turbo car.. there is almost nothing stealth about the,. they make some pretty wicked noises.

check the FAQ's and search, there is a tonne of info on remote turbo setups.

keep in mind you do not have to tig a manifold.. mig would work just fine, its just not as pretty. but who cares, function over form..

there is a gentlemen on the boards that has a remote mount turbo set-up, and i don't think he has spent any more then any other well made turbo set-up, i know he put some good time into designing it and it shows.. he makes just as much power as any other turbo set-up on here, with the stock block.

look up post made by MR. Pute

We're currently putting together a remote mount setup on my buddy's civic. The cost of the extra piping and oil pump would put the cost over a traditional setup.
No, you can NOT invert the 2200 manifold, nice idea, but not happening.

youd want to use a intercooler either way , so might as well leave the intake sitting the same as stock

Why invert the TB and manifold? Even if you could, it's wasted work on a system that already works just fine in the configuration that it's already in. Just run your cold charge pipe like every other 2200 person does and run it through the intake bong hole. Here's a pic of CavX's car that cadwz24 and I welded up:

I've done it and had some pretty sweet results. It's a fun setup with advantages, along with disadvantages. Look up my previous posts about it that are either in this forum of the Photos forum (I can't remember which).

My oil pump cost ~$75. Do the research and you'll find what you need cheap.

Extra piping isn't that big of a deal either if you have a good source. There's a guy that sells tons of tubing on a yahoo shopping site, I can't remember the link offhand. His prices cannot be beat. I'll see if I can find a reciept from him and I'll post it later on.null

All I'm saying is that that is money that doesn't need to be spent on a traditional setup, that's all.

I understand your position, but if you want something fairly unique with a decent amount of bragging rights, the pitiful amount of extra money you'd spend is well worth it.

You don't have to invert the manifold to hide your charge pipe like Mr. pute said go through where the stock air box would sit and just play it off as a cold air intake and there tons of way to conseal a bov and its noise the turbo on the other hand im sure is fairly quiet being mounted under the car and all but if you invest you time in it no doubt you could tell some one I only got a CAI wanna race and then look at the funny faces they make as you smoke by saying "Oh my CAI is connected to a remote mount turbo sucka" or at least thats what I would do but I just want a traditional turbo, but for the first month or so I'll run the streets with a BPV instead of a BOV until my covers blown then VVvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! SSSHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! hahaha!!!

I'm actually thinking about changing over to a remote setup for next year. The real cost comes in as far as all the tubing, couplers and clamps you'd need. Not to mention it's gotta be tricky running all of it under a (probably) lowered car. But I agree...run the charge piping up through that opening. Save yourself a LOT of time and money. This' the truck we just did a remote install on, per the customer's idea/request. I fought the concept at first, but got pretty attached to the end result:

Wow. Totally odd install. Very unique for sure. The main thing I don't like about that setup is the fact that it looks like you're driving around with a mailbox attached to a cage bar when the shield is over the turbocharger. Regardless, sweet work with the fab of the piping.

wow , kinda reminds me of that civic with the turbo sitting out side of the hood

the nice advantage of that 1 in the truck , no sucking up water , except when you wash it , lol
