Stock bottom end 2200 + boost?
Thursday, March 15, 2007 6:34 PM
Im going to be doing a turbo set up by the end of this summer. My question is how much boost can the bottom end of a 2200 safely take?

I Know I know fuel and timing are an issue. This is something that I havent stopped researching for about a month now and I have a pretty fair understanding and good plan on what to do about making it run rich enough with as little knock as possible..

Saying that I ran the cleanest tune as possible, how far can you push a 2200 before it starts to fall apart? ( i probably wont get there for a year or so after the turbo goes on (and i will eventually build her up)... But I want to be able to drive with some boost for a while and not worry about the bottom end failing me. im thinking ill be running about 5psi or so untill i get hpt and a built motor.

With proper fuel and timing should 5psi be a safe amount to drive daily on a stock bottom end? anyone go higher (like a one timer for a track?)

thanks for any help

I honestly believe you could put 300hp to the crank on a completely stock bottom end assuming everything else is ideal (ZERO detonation). This would require great care when it comes to everything above the block deck, but I'd love to see someone give it a shot.
As far as what has been done, 250hp.
Asking "how much boost" is meaningless, as pressure will depend on other things, hp is what counts.

Well, I dont imagine that on a stock motor that id be anywhere near 250hp (whp or just sae?) with just 5psi... ive read that its gonna get me maybe 160-180whp with that amount of boost...

Yeah, 5psi on a stock motor will net you around 200 at the crank.
That 250 was whp, sorry.

sorry to double post, saying that 5psi nets me somewhere in the area of 160-180 whp -- is that safe enough to drive for a year or so (i drive rather hard sometimes)

lol I ran 10-11 Psi on my 2200 and made 240whp and I beat the Crap out of it everyday.. But each car is different. I would agree with Notec. I can see 300 being possible.

agreed.. I put down 244whp with my mani cracked/clutch slipping......

Yea but now you have HP tuners and such. I expect to see Great thing from you. lol You are last of the US... Show the Ecos whats up..

I'm placing an order this weekend for some 1.88" dia valves for the intake of my 2.2 cyl head. I ordered up some Duramax spring retainers and keepers this morning which will fit a 7mm stem on the exhaust side and will go with Z24 style springs. I don't think he's the last, but I do think he's the most active right now.

Agreed, With time and money , mostly time, Ill be riding with the ecos to the best that I can... granted, Itll take more research and probably about a year, but I'll be damned if I dont get at LEAST into the 13s with this setup eventually.

well i kno im sticking with it. If everything goes as to plan then by next year i should have around 350whp

Aren't Z24 springs too short?

Oh, Geezus...

LMAO! I've been spending way too much time in Cavalier land. We're using Z28 springs. 110# pressure @ 1.800" installed height. +,100" long BBC valve is about .050" short of stock length intake valve, so with lash caps I'm hoping to avoid the whole "rocker hits the spring keeper" issue.

On a side note. Whats the most anyone has gotten with both stock bottom end and valve train?? I have a programmable msd dis 2, programmable secondary injectors, fmic, and wideband. And most importatly, another engine I'm already rebuilding (original has 150,000 miles) I'm thinking about getting nutty by the end of summer with some racing fuel and see how far I can push things before I blow up the motor. I'm thinking that as long as I can watch detonation alot of people will be surprised by how far you can push these motors by using some good ignition/fuel tuning and detonation prevention.

Well with STOCK your not going to be getting much over the 250 range only cause the pistons are rated at 240ish and the rods around 220ish I think and we were already pushing those to the edge them selfs... Now with Upgraded pistons and rods I can see 350 being the max for Valve train.....

I agree. Ensure you can deliver enough fuel for the power the engine is producing. Make sure you spend plenty of time watching for the signs of detonation. They can sneak up on you.

You shouldn't need race fuel until boost climbs to ludicrous pressure. A frined's car using stock rods and forged pistons (2.0 OHC Pontiac engine) is at 20+ psi on 93 octane fuel. Timing is everything.

Remember that peak torque numbers at or above 5252 rpm increase hp dramatically. Stock torque peak is at a rather low rpm.

My car dyno'd at 206 WHP & 257 WTQ on 5.5 PSI on stock bottom end, no head work & is my daily driver

wow!, those numbers are all very impressive, I didn't know the LN2 had that much potential, good to see these numbers

HP Tuners | Garrett T3/T04B | 2.5" Charge Pipes | 2.5" Downpipe | 650 Injectors | HO Manifold | Addco front/rear | Motor Mounts | HKS SSQV | Spec stage 3 | AEM UEGO Wideband | Team Green LSD | FMIC | 2.3 cams | 2.3 oil pump swap | 280WHP | Now ECOTECED

with stock bottom end, I should have added that.

i think one of the main reasons my numbers are so high on 5.5 PSI is greatly due to the J Tuners tubular manifold as against to the log style manifold
