Didn't know exactly where to post this, but here goes. Out driving the car today, and accedently shifted from 3rd to 2nd while I was at about 4000rpm in 3rd. Now I've got all kinds of problems and have no idea where to start. The car makes a grinding noise when above 2500rpm now. Sometimes the clutch will engage just fine, others I've got to rev the engine to get 1st gear to engage, but after that everything is fine, as long as I keep it under 2500rpm. I took it above 2500 once since it happened, about 3000, and the engine sounds like it's falling apart, but I'm not completely sure that's were the noise is coming from. I'm also not sure if the engine is the problem or is it just a clutch. The reason I think clutch is because of the intermittent problem with engaging gears. Or is the problem bigger than that, is it trans or engine, or both. Any suggestions would be great.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the motor mount. I broke my upper motor mount check yours.
glazed clutch? It slips when reving at high gears. Hopefully you didn't damage any gears.
sounds like you have a bad blocker ring on your syncro. that would cause issues with shifting, and can be cuased by crazy gear clash that your talkiing about.
also, and im not sure on this one. if you have a helical gear cut like we do. and you engage it that fast, it will create heavy thrust whcih will screw everything up. it could throw off preload it could screw up balance. bad stuff
regardless, your going to need to drop you trans. I would suggest picking one up from a junker and just swap it.

Same thing is happening to me.. I just changed engines last year and it's buzzing at 2800 and goes away at 3200+

I was thinking about a syncro problem, but then wouldn't I only have the problem in certain gears, as for the motor mount, I've had a broken motor mount it was slightly different than this but I checked both motor mounts and both trans mounts, everything is ok there. I'm getting a running motor out of one of my friends cars for $50, so that makes putting a new trans in at the same time a little easier, I've been hearing from a few people that I may have screwed up valve springs and valves as well. Mine doesn't ever go away it only gets worse as the rpm's climb. Do you guys think there is any possible damage to other parts beyond motor and trans? Maybe clutch, slave cylinder, maybe even a problem with the turbo? I haven't really started tearing into it yet, but I'm just trying to be prepared for what I might find. I don't want to replace engine, trans, and put a new clutch in (I'm doing this because the stage 2 is 2 and a half years old, and I've wanted a stage 3 since I turboed the car) and have something still be broken. Keep the suggestions coming, I'm all ears and thank you so far it's helped a little.

I seen what happens to a 2.4 when this happens........ a lifter shattered and took out the cam, cam tower, valve, and head......... wasnt pretty.
the shifting problem could be clutch related, if you shot a spring out of the center section, busted a friction plate......

Well I talked to the guy at spec, he said he was 90% sure that I damaged the clutch or tob, or both, as for the head being destroyed, dunno until I take the valve cover off, which I'm planning to do in about 10min, so I'll update on what I find, once again thanks.

Ok so I pulled the valve cover off, all looks well from the top, is there any way to check the rod bearings? I know I gotta pull the pan off, but is there any way to tell if the bearings are bad. Could this all just be clutch?

I find the trans to be hard to believe, only because the trans that's in there is only 4months old. I sheared a pin on the original trans, so I replaced the whole thing with a trans that only had about 6k on it. That was back in November, I drove the car briefly in December, then put it away for a couple months, last Sunday was only the 4th time I had even driven the car this year. I find trans hard to believe, but that doesn't mean I'm counting it out as a problem. When I drop the trans out to replace the clutch, I will separate the housing and take a look at all of the gears and such. At this point I'm kinda just trying to find out potentionally all that is wrong or could be wrong. Like I said all seems fine in the head, at least from the top.

if the top end stayed together I dought the bearing are hurt. draint he oil into a pan and check for any signs of metal shavings also a compression test is a good idea and inspect the plugs for ny sign of damage when you pull them out.. If you rev the engine does it make noise or only when it gear? if it makes notice all the time get up under it and have someone else rev it up and listen to the head, oil pan, and trans and see if you can find the main source of the noise.
Did a compression test and inspected the plugs, all is well, so I guess the motor is fine. Put the car on jack stands and had someone rev the car a little, most of the noise is coming out of the inspection hole at the bottom of the trans, a lot of tinging and noises like that. I'm going to put a clutch in and see what happens, I'll update after that is done. Thanks guys for the help.

BTW I never fully engaged 2nd from 3rd, I had the clutch released about 3/4 of the way and the car started to bog a little realized what had happened, then re-engaged the clutch quickly and shifted to 4th. It didn't make any noise until I pushed the clutch to go to 5th, yet another reason I'm mainly focusing on clutch, I also spoke to a guy at SPEC, told him the whole story, and he seems to be pretty sure I popped one of the springs on the clutch disc, maybe messed up a finger on the pressure plate, and possibly blew the tob/slave.

This is most deff a borken flywheel bolts.
I did it in my cav at the drag strip when you hear the click/knocking/pinging can you feel it in the clutch pedal?
Does it sound like a card in a bycicle spoke at a very high rate of raotaion only getting worse as you speed up?
If so this is most likely the case. Like I siad I did it myself at the track and another person here in AZ did the same thing.

I cant spell
broken flywheel bolts
got it that time

Yes I feel it in the clutch, and yes it gets worse as I speed up. What about part #'s for those bolts, can I just use standard grade 8's or something or do I have to get them from GM? Did it cause problems with the clutch actually engaging? At times the clutch seems as though it's not even there, the pedal goes down and comes back up, but it won't go into gear easily, so I'm guessing the tob is ok, but what about the clutch itself? Did you replace that as well?

No I didnt have to replace the clutch thankfully.
However you may have to. I got my bolts from GM (exspensive and time consuming) I think you can get some from like ARP or someother fastener company like that. I am not sure on the part number call the parts department at the dealership.

I was planning a stage 3 from spec anyway. Why time consuming, it's only like 6 bolts, if I remember correctly. Was your flywheel itself damaged? I've got a Fidanza 7.5 in my car, replacing that along with the clutch would suck BIG TIME!
---------------------------------------------------
4 Cams...32 Valves...5 Liters...This Could Get Fun!
Time consuming because I had to wait for the parts to get in. I got my flywheel resurfaced didn't have to replace it.

Awesome, I'm going to drop the trans in about 2 weeks, I'm ordering a new body kit (TRD Front, RKSport Sides and Rear Lip) at the same time as the clutch. Thanks again for all the help guys.

The final verdict is in on what the problem was......Broken Flywheel bolts, yeah 3 of them. So all is well now, one of my friends had some spares off an engine so didn't have to wait for GM and now I've got the stage 3 in there, lots of fun to come, thank you everyone who had advice on this problem.

Not exactly the same problem. I replaced the clutch and the broken bolts about 2 weeks ago. Now today, I take the car for a drive, hit it in 3rd, but instead of going all the way to the full 12psi that I've got it set to, it stopped at 10psi. It sounded like the bov was wide open. Naturally I let off and there was a strange noise coming from the passenger side of the engine. Sounded like something around cylinder 1, could've been 2. Anyway, the only reason I bring this up again is because I had this noise when I first screwed up and missed the gear a month ago. Only it wasn't there after I replaced the clutch. At that time I went through did a compression test, I also removed the oil pan to inspect the bottom of the engine as best I could. Also, I removed the valve cover after the engine was cool enough to work on, and can't turn the cams at all this time. I was trying to do another compression test, but can't spin the engine by hand. One more thing, and this is the most bizarre, when the car is at idle the noise is there, neutral as well, you know when you're just driving and put the car in neutral, it is also apparent during upshifts (as soon as the clutch is depressed) but is barely there while cruising, and to make this as difficult as possible, when it's idling, and I press the clutch, the noise mysteriously disappears. It sounds like a major exhaust leak when it's there, but it's not that, I've checked the manifold, there are no cracks or anything. That's just what the sound is like, only about 10 times magnified in loudness. Is it possible that I messed up the head back then, but because the car sat for 3 weeks while I waited to get all my parts togther the problem wasn't as evident as it has become, since I've gotten through the break-in on the clutch and have been pushing the car a little more now than I was right after the clutch replacement. Please any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
