Is this purely a bolt-on kit? Or will i have to buy alot of aftermarket parts to implement it's full potential? I tinker, and my car is mostly garaged, since it's almost purely project now, and this is a dense curiosity of mine.

you can buy the GM kit and wouldnt have to buy one single bolt, nut ect.... and put out about 180-190whp but there is alot more you can still do that would still be small mods like intake and such.. with out having to change out the pulley you might be able to get about 200whpish...

depends on when his car was built, i guess you could say 1999.5+ will work lol u can put it on pre-99.5's tho, just a tad bit more work and some more parts needed. you cant use the gmsc's injectors pre 99.5 though, nor the ECM reflash.
josh, dont forget wade jarvis's 214whp on a stock exhaust.

For your car, you will have to get a header that doesn't have the EGR port, OR close it up with the EGR block off plate.
any GM dealer can get you these:
EGR Block-off Plate (#24575505)
EGR Block-off Plate Gasket (#24573947)
You will need a starter from a 2000 2.4 grand am (i mean, that's what I used, but i'm guessing the cavi is the same). This is smaller than the one you have. Don't forget to save the other one as there is a core charge
You will need to get the low impedence injectors. The gm kit comes with high impedence, which your motor cannot use. I got mine from RC Engineering. If you plan on uppin the boost, get some 370cc injectors... otherwise 320's will be fine
There are some parts that you have to swap out, but those come in the kit.

You can just use the exhaust gasket from a '00 or newer (doesn't have the cutout for EGR port) 2.4.
You can use the high impedence injectors (most '99> are from the factory). Most people don't read enough information to understand that you CAN in fact use high or low impedence injector with low impedence drivers BUT you CANNOT use low impedence injectors with high impedence drivers (without using resistors).
Most '99's have a smaller starter from the factory but there seems to be a difference in the case for '00>. So you should be okay with your starter.

Yeah he's going to have to get HPT to make it run... or go the old fashioned root and get an s-afc and fpr and tune that way... not really a great option unless you are familar with how to tune with those

Would you even recommend a supercharger for my j since it has 88,000 miles? Would it even be economical at this age?

If you HAVE to drive it everyday, don't boost it. If you don't, just upgrade whatever breaks along the way (broken rod? upgrade to forged, blown gasket? take the time to port or swap heads and use ARP studs, ect). I'm not saying that something WILL break, only that there is more downtime associated with this route than a stock car (duh)
I want to boost my cav so bad I can taste it, but I cannot afford to have it quit on me any sooner than it already will.

Well, i make a lot of cash now for my age, and like i said, i tinker. So if the car BREAKS, per se, I will just buy another. But also, i don't really need to worry, since i have access to another car if something needs to be worked on.
I want to boot mine like nobodies business as well
The only problem, the kid who had the car before me made a mess of the car (ie, running a venom 400 chip, using zip ties to hold stuff down, and not conditioning rubber so it cracked), and i feel as if there would now be alot of carbon deposits in the engine, and the pistons might need to be replaced.
Any advice?

Well if your up for a rebuild and you can afford it, go for it! Forged rods and pistons (don't lower compression with the M45) are an excellent start.

Well, here's the thing, I'm gradually learning as i go along, and I am diligent at what i do, as well. But i am unfamiliar of these terms.
What are forged rods and pistons, can i do it myself, and how much would parts cost? I have all the tools ill need in my garage, that used to be my dad's when he worked on cars, thus my general knowledge.

I JUST boosted mine starting like a month ago, and i've got 93k on the body & motor, and about 70ish or so on the tranny/clutch. The thing to remember about s/c a car is that it's only going to work when you want it to... Meaning if you don't floor it, you won't boost as you won't have built up enough rev's to get the charger to compress the air. I don't even really start boosting til about 35-3800 (about 5 psi) and max's out 9.5psi right around 5900ish. So if i'm driving along, and i shift before 3500, I'm still in vac. Not boosting also means you retain your current gas mileage which is a plus. It's more like, put the foot down and ure gonna get a nice jump in power, otherwise, keep on crusin, you know what i'm sayin?
forged internals are parts you buy... i'm sure there has to be a STICKY about all the stuff to buy to rebuild your motor. If not head over to quad4forums.com and look for posts by spyhunter. He has a 2000 grand am he turbo'd puttin down 400whp and he's got a build sheet (in fact, it may be on this site as well). Sure you could rebuild your block, but there's a lot to it... enough that I know I won't be attempting it, but if you are serious about rebuilding your 2.4, then find a race shop that does rebuilds, or a local shop where you have an ASE GM tech on hand as he would be the most likely capable of doing the job correctly
