LD9 4340 forged crank update
Friday, July 06, 2007 5:55 AM
Hello all I recently emailed Eagle and asked them to build us LD9'ers a 4340 forged crank and their first reply was a flat out NO " there isn't a market to support us going to the trouble". To which I responded " how many cranks would it take for you to justify building it" and there response is " 40 cranks per month for 36 months at a cost of $600 - $650 each " which is 1440 cranks total.

So put the word out if we can get that many people interested with money in hand we can finally get a reasonably priced 4340 forged crank for our engines. You can either email Eaglerods directly or email me and I'll forward the emails to them, lets do this. Also if you are members of any other forums which cars use the LD9 please pass the info on so we can get these cranks made, thanks.

To mod sorry for the double post but after I sent the other one I thought more people in the boost forum would be inclined to want a 4340 forged crank.

are you kidding?? or???

they wont sell 20 cranks a YEAR let alone 1440.

dont get me wrong man, id love to see it happen, but theres just no way, seriously. ive said it many times, and ill say it again-the ECO boys have it too damn easy.

as far as MOST of the aftermarket is concered the 2.4 twin cam is dead. the ECO's are where it's at. thats why patriot wont make us a head as well.

I hate the say the same thing as the last 2, but its true. There are not that many serious LD9 owners to meet Eagles numbers. You might have better luck getting Crower to do a one time production run of 10 and you will lucky to get that many.

theres no way they will do $900,000 in business selling cranks for an ld9.....they probably havent even done that in rods yet.

Some still has yet to ever built and push a motor to the limits of the stock crank. Eagle would be stupid to produce one.

I would venture to bet that the guy was being a smart ass. Without forcing people to front the money for at least a year's worth of cranks, I would highly doubt they would even begin to consider manufacturing them. Listen to Chris if you really want a lighter/stronger crank...or better yet, listen to Jeremy: Try to name one person apart from GM who has been able to shatter a crank from raw power/torque. I know you want 500+ whp Dale, but you should know by now that it is REEAAALLLYYY going to cost you with these motors. My guess is, during our lifetime, you will be able to count the number of people capable of shattering a stock LD9 crank on one hand.

its not just the fact that its stronger, they are LIGHTER as well. but remove the balance shafts and you drop a ton.

just use the 2.4 crank and do the 2.3 oil pump swap and yull be golden.

i think if enough people email them asking to make a forged crank for the ld9 they hopefully consider doing a test run of 10-20 to see how fast they sell.

To sell 1440 Cranks, that is assuming there is 1440 Boosted LD9s out there, THAT IS NOT THE CASE, lol

They would never sell 20 cranks. Hell, GM only sold 20 LD9 supercharger kits in the first year and look how many people were begging for those...

im sure its going to cost them that much in RandD to develop that. they said they need to sell atleast 40/month for 36 months? thats a bunch of bull @!#$. take the stock crank, do a CAD drawing of it so you can get it machiened and use a lighter stronger material than what the old one is made out of.

it would take maybe a week or two worth of hours to develop by a professional company like them. they gave you those numbers because they know its not achievable. do what was said in an eariler post and remove the balanc shafts. that will lighten it right up. i highly doubt more than a dozen of the members of this forum would ever even need a stronger crank than what we have already.

I was going to say, has anyone ever had a stock crank fail? What's the rush for a forged unit when the stocker may go to 1000+hp like a 4g63 for all we know? I think your time would be better spent elsewhere...say...a dry sump
