Alright, I posted this question in the maintenance forum and I was told to just replace my entire sending unit, so I figured I would ask here.
After dropping my tank and pulling out the sending unit, I noticed the blazer pump was slightly different than the pump from my 96' 2.2. There are 2 hoses connected to my pump, the accordian one and another smooth black hose. The blazer pump has only 1 connection area for the accordian hose and not the other. Is this a problem? Should I just get the stock sending unit w/ pump and then place an in-line pump to boost my fuel pressure?
I am turbo charged and need the additional fuel. Any ideas or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
This is a problem imo. Turns out people have been using the wrong pump for quite a while. The small hose is for a special device called a "jet pump" which keeps the cup around the main pump full even when the tank is not. When people do the blazer pump conversion and they don't use the Jet pump they have problems with the main pump starving for fuel... "Fuel cut" is what most people call it.
There was a thread a couple of months ago where this was figured out by someone who made their own connection for the jet pump. I posted a link to an aftermarket pump which has a connection for this pump. You could also try to look for a pump for a late model Camaro / T/A which would be able to support around 400 hp and would have the proper connections to make the modular fuel sender work like GM intended it to.
If you decide to try using the Blazer pump and think that drilling holes or cutting holes in the sender is the answer, remember that every hole which lets fuel into the cup will also let it back out when you're cornering hard, braking, or acceleratiing. You can look through old messages to see what other people have done to try and make the wrong pump work correctly and the varying degrees of success they've found.
