some turbo downpipe questions

Of course with everyone who pieces together a turbo kit has to somehow get a custom downpipe. My turbine side will be toward the driver side, and obviously I cant buy a "universal" dp as no turbo/manifold combo is realy the same. I couldnt buy one online since they dont know where exactly the turbo sits and what kind of clearance issues there would be.

Ill be buying a 5 bolt dp flange, but then need to finish it off. Im thinking I could make it myself if I use aluminized steel, since Id only be using a fluxcore and no gas for stainless. I just dont think Id be able to make it all at once and would rather get it tuned and running ok before worrying about finishing the exhaust. So heres my questions.

Would it be ok if I welded a like a 6" 90* bend coming down off the 5 bolt flange, and then just clamped a piece of flexible pipe to it and ran it down towards the ground away from any hoses/lines? I know this is ghetto and stupid,as would be loud and sound like a** but would only be temporary until I mock up the rest or have a shop finish the downpipe. Most likely Id do it, since there are no good fab shops around me.

Does anyone have any pics of their downpipe that has the turbine side facing the driver side of the car? If so it would be very helpfull.

I will be drilling 2 holes and welding in bungs for my front o2 and wideband. I cant remember if it doesnt matter if put the wb closer to the turbo, or is there a certain distance it must be from the turbo? Ive seen downpipes with them as close as 6" though. If it has to be a bit farther away then I will have to fab the downpipe all at once as I will need the wb hooked up for proper tuning.

Thanks in advance.

Also, wheres some good sites for oil fittings? I plan to get a function 7 -4an feed fitting with 1/16 restrictor in it, but what are some good places to get fittings for pretty cheap? I need to find a 45* for my oil pan fitting, and -10an for return fitting

I would head somewhere local to buy fittings. Should be able to find a fastener store somewhere close to you. Fittings are sometimes better to see and touch in my mind. Theres so many different ones it will be difficult to find what you want online I think. Your choice though.

Also I would def try to finish that down pipe before tuning. Aluminized steel should work. It's just not gonna last as long but whatever it will go the same. Just use big enough pipe and keep the bends smooth as possible. As far as where to put the O2 sensor I am no pro. However the closer you put to the turbo the reading should be more accurate. However if you read up on your sensor temp rating it might give you an idea on how far away to put it. You'll know if it's too close. lol

Thanks man. I dont know of any stores like that around me, but Ill take a look. I did get a few things I need for the feed from home depot haha.

I know I should finish the downpipe, but I dont realy wana drive it to a shop to get it finished when its untuned. I think Im just gona weld the bend coming down off the flange andave a shop finish it. No shops do mandrel around me so Ill just buy some 2.5" mandrel bends for them to finish it. Plus the shop could weld up a res for me while Im there. I may just have the downpipe and then some kind of res or race muffler until I order piping from custom tubes; prolly 3"

that was a big hump for me to over-come when i did my turbo. i bought the piping online, i estimated all the bends id need and then bought a flux core welder. i used normal steel for the piping. And you can weld stainless with a flux core. i dont know about stainless to stainless but i was able to weld on my flex pipe/cat/resonator all of which had stainless steel lips. i still have not finished my exhaust. its run to the resonator and i have yet to put a muffler on it. and at this point i dont think i am - just gotta fab up the tip. keep in mind the turbo acts minimally as a resonator but without a cat on your exhaust as well it will be VERY loud. i dont see why you cant just fab up the top of the downpipe to get it running but i suggest atleast getting a cat on there or something. i mean if you can fab up your own downpipe why bother bringing it to a shop? save youself money and do it yourself its not that hard if you already have a welder.

Did you use gas when you welded yours up?

Im not gona be running a cat. Hell I dont have one now and Im n/a, and its not even loud. I do have a 30" glasspack as a res though. I may be able to fab my own dowpipe, but im not the best welder; Im decent but need practice and I dont want to skimp out on the downpipe.

nope we used mild steel wire to weld everything, and it still bonded the mild steel piping to the stainless steel components... you know what i recomend? my boyfriend was a begninner welder when he did mine but how he practiced before attempting the piping was he welded together his own welding table... you should try that (having a table i guess makes it 10x easier) and that will give you some practice and i mean he did fine. the welds dont look that great purely because flux core welders are messy - they splatter alot but other than that he was acutally surprised not a single joint leaked. if you take your time and try to practice a lil it'll be fine.

I have a few friends that can weld pretty good with a fluxcore, but Ill be doing my install about an hour away from them and their pretty busy. Ive had a little practice, but need more because i dont want my downpipe looking like complete crap lol. I do have some spare exhaust tubing I dont need thats kinda junk so maybe ill practice with that.

^^thats your best bet..turn the heat down and wire speed up a tad and go at it not too hard really..just make sure its clean..phil

Yea, Ill grind down the welds and sand it then clean it up some. I do make sure I keep the heat down not to burn any holes also. Ill get some practice in before I do my downpipe, I still have alot of parts to gather so I have some time. Thanks for the info guys.

Anyone know about the wideband question?

it really depends on what wideband that you get. I think my aem said 18" or so from the turbo. i had it about 12" from the turbo on my ohv with no problems. I think the innovate ones can be mounted closer. just check the directions of whatever wideband you pick up and you'll be all set. good luck with the project
