newb to boost, few questions
Tuesday, October 23, 2007 11:47 AM
i have a 98 z24 and i wanna go turbo, i already have a manifold, intercooler, fuel rail, planninjg on bosh yellow top inj's, i know i need charge pipes and a fpr, and i have a friend that will set up my timing so i can run the factory ecm, im planning on running 12-16 psi.
does anyone have any suggestions on any thing else i might need? also im wondering if anyone can suggest a good turbo that will allow me to start reaching boost in low rpm,s. and what can i do about the egr, my manifold doesn't have the port for it? should i go with a 99 ecm?
i hate sounding like a newb but ive never boosted a car before and i don't know what little minor @!#$ i need that i might not have thought about. any help is much appreciated.

What size are the bosch injectors? 12-16lbs will be quite a bit of power, so I hope your motor and fuel system can support it. Im new to boost and Im piecing together my own kit, using a garret t3/to4 .42/.48 turbo which should spool pretty good since its not a very large turbo.

Dont forget good size Oil fittings and lines; 10an for the return and 4an with a restrictor for the feed would be good. Also a wideband is very important, and Id recomend trying to find someone with hpt. Are you planning on running an internal or external wg?

uh, yellow tops are pathetically small.

I suggest you rethink your injector selection.

Im gona be using stock lsj injectors. 378cc's which I got for $10 off ebay haha. If you want to boost more than 12lbs Id prolly go with some rc 650's or bigger.

And PJ, damn I love the new sig

o.k. well where did you get your 440's. is it possible to get large injectors from a parts house like napa that will work ?
online shopping really isn't an option for me so im getting to do this fun way, good friends, parts trading and napa.
also what size down pipe and exhaust should i run?
thanks guys.

yellow tops (from what I saw) at 19# injectors... which comes out to 200cc

stock injectors are 252cc or something like that.

green tops are 440cc

440 would be good for a decent low boost car depending on the turbo selection. but at like15ish psi or so I'd say they won't be enough.

its up to you to decide what you need based on the power you're going to make. google 'injector calculations' and read up on the subject.

everyone can tell you 1000 different injectors to run because they've run them or a buddy of theirs have run them, but its your car, the fuel system is something you should understand and know how to upgrade. when you know how it works, and have a power goal, making it better is easy.

personally, I plan on running a two stage injection system (ala hahn portfueler) with multiple injectors per cylinder.. but thats because I plan on pushing a lot more than 15psi of boost.

pick your power level. choose your turbo, choose your fuel system.

If you want a set of 550's, get a hold of Karo at carcustoms.net and purchase a set of RC's from him. That's what I would do if I were you.

alright thanks for the help guys. this is gonna be a long project. i was thinking about it last night and decided to go with a quad hybrid, 086 head, 2.3 oil pump,
t03/04 turbo, .20 overbore, pnp 3 angle valve job with the carcustoms over size valves, w41 cams,
eagle rods and weisco pistons. i havent figured out what to do about a computer to run that though. but i got an extra engine and nothin but time.
i just hope im able to build as good a set up as most of you guys have. i was reading the 2.4 turbo pic therad and im still speachless. i had no idea
a cavy could go to that level. but like i said you guys have been a big help and i promise ill make a progress thread soon as i get started. if anyone has any further suggestions
please feel free. ill need all the help i can get.

W41 cams are more for NA performance as they have a significant overlap. If you are seriously considering w41 cams, you may want to look into getting adjustable cam gears made, or redrilling the stock cam gears. Otherwise just stick with HO cams.
