Car starts to go lean half way down the track
Tuesday, October 09, 2007 8:03 PM
I had my car tuned. I raced it a couple of times had fun car worked good other than real bad wheel spin.\

The last time i took my car to the track I noticed it started to go lean on me half way down the track. I would start out around 12.2-12.5 and by the end of the 1/4mi. be closing in on 14. I get scared of blow in it up when it goes that lean. I thought maybe tank was to low on gas and wasn't able to pick up fuel. I filled tank up and still had the problem on the way home. I does this all the time now. I don't seem to have a vac leak but don't know for sure. How can I check to see if its my fuel pump not keeping up (it did for about 2 months than this started) or if it is a vac leak or something else?

may be you need a fuel pump?

whats your setup?

Sounds to me like your pushing more air then your fuel is tuned for in the higher rpm range

Proving out your fuel pump should be easy. Put a gauge on it and check your pressure during idle and boost. Make sure it is holding whatever pressure you need.

from what I can see you have stock injectors get in some 370cc's quick man

How much "boost" are you running?

Yes I am running stock injectors. I was told to stay away from changing my injectors by the guy who tuned my car. I have not had any trouble getting fuel when we denied my car or the first couple of times I raced it. I am daily driving it at 7 racing it at 10. I do not have a fuel gauge in the car just one on my fuel rail. It can flow over 110 psi but I done know for how long. If i clamp my return fuel line It immediately pegs the gauge. What I don't understand is how can it happen all at once. On the day it started doing this my first couple passes were fine 12.2-12.7 all the way down the track. Than later that day this started to happen and hasn't stopped. I personally think my MU is junk. I have allot of problem with it. For a while my car ran 10-11 all the time I couldn't get it to go any leaner now exact opposite. By the way when we denied tuned it we monitored the AFR and fuel pressure is was fine we purposely made the car run really rich under boost through 1,2,3,4 just to see if it would go lean never did MU seemed fine than. Car just kept running richer with more boost. Than we changer it so it would only go to 12.2.

Thanks Brandon

Swap out those stock injectors asap. Lets start with the obvious solutions. You can't expect to run much boost and not have it lean out up top.

Blew it up, build numbers coming soon

Also, a bit of advice. If the guy who is tuning your car told you to stay away from getting injectors, he probably shouldn't be tuning your car. Ask him if he's willing to take the responsibility when you blow up your car. What are you tuning with? 12.2-12.7 isn't really "fine" at all for pump gas on stock timing maps.

When it was tuned on the dyne it was consistently 12.2-12.3. Now it goes everywhere. I have changed the needle on my MU form One extreme to the other right now trying to get it lichened back up on top end with no results.

As far as injectors go I do have ford brown tops I can put in. What AFR should I use I got the one from automotive to use and found out it doesn't fit. It hit the timing chain cover really bad. Is there some other kind out there that is a direct bolt on. Will my car ever idle right again if i change the injectors?

Also like I said earlier on the dyno I was able to get the car down into high 10s low11s with 7 psi of boost in high RPM in 4th gear. car never showed a sign of going lean. This proble just happened all at once.

I am using only the cartech FMU to tune with.

Thanks Brandon

Any help guys? What AFPR are you 2.4l guys using? As stated above i have the aeromotive one and it hits the timing chain housing? Should I just go get a universal AEM And tap my fuel rail to put fittings in it?

Talk to Boosted2Point4. I think he did something like spacers or something to make that work.
