Engine grenaded... Learn from me!
Monday, November 19, 2007 2:36 PM
Well after 2 weeks of having a boosted 2200 the engine grenaded. why you ask? I bought an ebay turbo kit and the wastegate failed. Yup I'm that stubborn guy who didn't listen to anyones warnings. Please do me a favor and invest in a kit don't buy from ebay, especially from godspeed AKA gs infinity. Now i gotta strip the engine and rebuilt my daily driver... in 2 days when I have to work. Learn from my mistakes!

I'm assuming thats the company that sold him the wastegate that failed.....not godspeed the guy on here....its a company on ebay.

You are part of the 10% of JBO that actually admits it when and why this happens, thanks.

Also its not buying things off ebay that gets you in trouble, its WHAT you buy off ebay, and the phrase "you get what you pay for" applies more than ever when shopping there.

Ive been in the same situation before with the Koni Yellows install. I messed up drilling out a strut mount at around 9:30pm on a Sunday night, had the whole suspension torn out. Drove all around Cincinnati until finally at Midnight I found a store that had a strut mount in stock, got home, drilled it out, re-assembled all by myself and was at work the next morning 5:30 am which was about an hours drive away for me. After this I realized the value of the "beater ride" and haven't had to deal with any of those nightmares since.

That is a very valid correction not everything off ebay is junk. And i don't have a problem with our Godspeed just this company. Thanks for all the support! thats why i love this forum! I just had her at the dyno and got HPT very rich to make sure i wouldn't lean out. 4 hours later i pull out of a street and decide to open her up since i just had her tuned. I have a T3/T4 with a 60 trim, so it takes a bit to spool but once you hit it it hits hard. next thing i know i went from 2 lbs to 15 lbs let off the throttle and hear a nice pop and lost most of my power. luckily i was right down the street from my house and coasted home to find smoke and steam billowing out of where half my head gasket should have been. The kicker of it is i had a cometic custom MLS 074 head gasket put in to prevent this. lol. I got tuesday and wednesday off from class so i'm going to rebuilt her then and hope it was just the head gasket and i don't have bigger problems. Moral of the story is cheap parts = boom. But i did make 140 ft/lbs of torque at 4000 rpm on the dyno just before at 7 lbs. Once again thanks for the concern guys!

I'm not really sure how this would have helped, if waste gate was stuck open most likely overboost would have been too quick for him to stop it if he wasn't paying attention and its hard to drive and watch a guage 100% of the time, thats why you need a buddy to log for you, which cant be all the time. A wide band wouldn't have helped either unless you had an alarm setup to trigger at a certain afr.

That was exactly the problem all this happened in a split second. As far as I knew and expected it was gonna blow off at 7 lbs. Boy was I wrong.

so the turbo itself actually worked though?

15psi for a split second and it grenaded... wow.. that sucks.

not many people know that most @!#$ sold on ebay is knock-off inferior garbage. BOV, wastegates, and turbos are all likely cheap copycat peices of crap which fail a lot more than the name brand stuff. The metalurgy is crap, the construction is crap.. it just leads to a bad product.

TiAL specifically, if you goto their website www.tialsport.com you can see pictures of ebay fakes..

what internals were you running?

i can see how a boost spike would cause detonation, especially 15 psi on stock engine (if your stock)

lee ran 12 psi on stock, but that didnt last long,(i think he sold that car cause of an leak)

but still the rest of the kit worked, it was just the wastegate that gave you trouble. what was your boost controller set at?

wanna sell that turbo for cheap?

I wonder if the line going to the wastegate came off, split or became pinched. Anyone of those would explain a boost spike.

true. ^^^

i wouldnt mark it down to a bad product yet. figure out what caused it too go bad, then if it looks like that damn thing just didnt work. then blame the kit. but for $900 for entire kit, i think you did fairly well. i mean you do still have a running turbo.

Re: Engine grenaded... Learn from me!

I was running stock internals. I was running 7 lbs. I just broke down the wastegate and what happened was the cheap diaphram separated from the metal housing and leaked into the control line. :-( And I'm gunna keep the kit. Actually I just got the head off and it's going back on tomorrow! We'll give her a another go with some better quality parts! I made 120 WHP but was told I wasn't able to hit the better half of the power band due to the size of the huge turbo.

120 whp?

thats horrible.

Re: Engine grenaded... Learn from me!
Wednesday, November 21, 2007 6:36 AM
^^^ theres no way thats right. 120 whp on boost is unheard of even for the ohv. on 7 psi you should at the very least be pushing 180-200 whp.

Re: Engine grenaded... Learn from me!

says who?

most ohvs dyno in at close to or below 100 hp stock, if hes making 120 to the wheels thats about 2-3 hp per lbs of boost, on a crap motor with a crap tune, I could see it.
