Well, the time has come to upgrade. I've finally got the fully built 2.4 and working on swapping in the Getrag trans at the moment. The supercharger will soon be on its way out, and a turbo setup is in the works. I need some advice as to which turbo to go with. I'll admit, I don't know a whole lot about turbo and reading the maps and graphs and such, so I'm looking to my fellow JBO guys for some advice.
Here is what I am looking for: I want to make somewhere between 300 and 400 HP. I would be fine starting around the 300 mark. I can always up the boost later, so I would like a turbo that could possibly support that. I also want something that spools fairly quickly. It will mainly be a daily driver in the summer, but will see some time at the drag strip occasionally, and possibly some autocrossing. So I want it to be responsive while on the street. I also don't want to spend $1,300 for a turbo. I am looking to spend between $500 and $800. Also, I'm running around 9.3:1 compression. Can someone throw out some suggestions as to what turbo would best suit my needs?

For some reason i thought the super 60 was for more then 300. Hmph .
I was browsing and saw this ...

good luck finding a real super 60. people need to get off the "super 60" bandwagon on this site. theres 100's of other turbos to choose from.
Blew it up, build numbers coming soon
Well I was going to suggest nothing smaller than a GT30 until I saw your price range you want to stay under.. Not sure how much T3/T4 hybrids are going for, but that wouldn't be a bad choice either.

T3/60-1 .82 ar!! That should get you easily to 400. Maybe get a .63 ar to get it to spool a little quicker.

a t3/t4 hybrid with some really good specs would do you amazing. I was pushing 330 whp and spooling before 3k rpms
LE61T PTE6262 Powered
look for a used GT30
-Trailblazer SS - not so custom 6.0L - custom intake - custom tune
- (1) 2.4L on an engine stand (1) blown trans (2) good quad trans (1) eco trans = party
I'd suggest a Garrett T3/TO4E 50 trim with a .63 a/r turbine housing. Its probably the best spooling turbo that will make the power you want within your price range.

im running a t3/t04e 57 trim with a .63a/r getting full boost at about 2200rpm with a fully built motor , its a good choice to look at so i agree with skilz

How much boost are you running? Any idea of what kind of power you are putting down, or any track times?

before the motor build i was doing 14.1s on 6 psi, the car has been down for a year and i just got it runing again so i missed the opportunity to go to the track with the built motor , but i get full boost 1000rpms faster than with the stock block. i hope to get the aem f/ic controller and turn up the boost to where the effeciency range is probably around 15-17psi and see how much fun thats going to be.
What CR pistons did you go with?

i went with wiseco 9-1 compression with .020 overbore
nice tubo you could make great power with that thing plus i think that its a ball bearing , i could be wrong but i thought gt35s are. you would get better spool than i do , ive got thrust bearings in mine

Damn, that's a good price. Just kind of leery since I don't know the guy... I'm not going to have the money until after Christmas when I have been able to put some hours in at work :-(

I know what you mean. I bought from one guy on that forum and everything was cool but you never know what youre getting involved in when dealing on the net.
ive got a garrett T3/TO4E – 57 Trim .63 AR sittin in my room, i was lookin to sell the whole kit ive got layin there, but for the right price the turbo can go alone. ill sell it to u tomorrow when i pass through eau clair on my way to illi

Well, this seems to be the major consensus so far. I've looked at a few and they appear to be in the $600-$700 range which is perfect. I think I will probably be going with this route. What is the maximum horsepower that this turbo could support? And around what PSI would I have to run to get to the 300 HP mark? Just curious. Also, I see that a ceramic coating is available for the turbo for an extra $100 or so. Is this worth it?

I concur. 60-1 is the best choice for a cheap turbo for this size engine and power range.
stick with a .63 a/r turbine if you want good spool.
fetter is running an .82a/r turbine and it seems like his car spools pretty decent, so.. it may be something to consider.
response is good, but you don't want your turbo spooling all the time... it gets annoying. so long as your turbo is at full boost before your drop RPM when you shift, you'll be golden.
Ceramic coating IS worth it, spend the extra money.. I spent 200 bucks on all my ceramic coated turbo shiat... Turbo, manifold, and downpipe.

Okay, here is the next question. Assuming I go with one of the above mentioned turbos, is it realistic to hit the 300+ HP mark without head work done? The block is fully built, but I simply don't have the time or money to build the head. I've got secret cams, and may throw in some HO cams, but that will be the extent of the head work. What are your opinions?

300hp shouldn't be hard to hit with a stock head.
