Hahn kit + boost controller
Wednesday, January 16, 2008 9:44 PM
I searched but found nothing conclusive...I have a TurboXS high performance dual stage manual boost controller I want to install and I am a little unclear where to install it because the Hahn kit T's into the line from the compressor housing to the wastegate actuator for the FMU.

I am assuming that I need to T again into the the line after the T for the FMU (so as not to screw up the signal the FMU is getting) but I wanted to be sure...where do I install this at??

Where has everyone mounted their solenoids, or where would they?

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks for the overwhelming response!!

This is my first turbo project...still learning...I asked Hahn and this was the response FYI

I got an extremely good deal on a turboXS hp dsbc, the high performance dual stage boost controller, and I opted for that over saving for who knows how long for an ebc. I plan on lengthening the rod on my actuator to below 7 (if possible) and setting the low boost to 7-8 and high to maybe 10 until I have internals. My question for you is about the install. My assumption for how to install this would be to take the signal from the vacuum line after the T for the FMU and then into the actuator, however I wanted to be sure and the instructions on TurboXS's web site (and the package) say to either hook it up between the line from the compressor to the actuator or to plug the compressor nipple and take the signal from the manifold and then into the actuator - no instructions on their site, obviously, have the FMU signal to worry about. Could you recommend which way to hook up the lines is preferable? (just running the FMU off of the compressor and the bc off of the manifold and into the actuator, or my assumption above, or...?)

The above quote is the best way to install any boost controller. That way there is never a doubt about the FPR receiving the proper signal. Pay close attention to your boost levels with the manual controller, they DO NOT have over boost safety features like the EBCs. Especially with the cold weather we are having lately.

I have been having boost creep up to and exceeding 11psi since it got cold out so was thinking this might help...don't have the cash yet for an ebc...

Matt, I didnot see this post in the past. You should of gave me a call or PM'd me. I have the single stage TurboXs MBC. I'm going to wait till spring to install it though. The way I 'm going to hook it up is put the MBC between the Vac T and the Actuator. This way I'm only adjusting the actuator.

Give me a call if you have any questions. If you want we can meet up.

no problem...I was going to do it that way but I think I'm just going to hook it up the way Hahn suggests, that way I'll have a better signal for the controller as well...

I would not bother with the manual boost controller, just save your money and leave it at whatever is defaulted by wastegate actuator. Re-tuning a car every other day is no fun if its a daily driver (esp. If you don't have a wideband). You can get a Greddy Profec B off ebay for 200 bucks, that is a lot better than risking it with an MBC.

Hahn also suggests not using a Boost Controller without a wideband, very good suggestion as you will quickly get yourself into trouble, esp. hitting boost spikes with a MBC!!

I haven't seen one under $285, don't want a used one...got this for $100 new...I like having my boost gauge too, don't have any room for more electronics in my car...I already have a wideband...and it too takes up space...

the hp dsbc is suppoesed to prevent spikes

not sure what you mean by re-tuning every other day...

well, not prevent but protect against rather...better than the standard mbc...

I know the benefits of the ebc and overboost protection, I'm not going to be running the mbc at higher boost often anyway, the point is this is a cheap(er) fix until I can get the ebc if I do...

the boost creep is bad and I think this will help with that for now...key word being now...I don't want to hit 11+ psi everytime I boost

On a different note, I was thinking of a cut out and 3" dp...what brand are you using BlackEco and does it leak?

Its just some 3" mandrel bends w/ flanges welded up by an exhaust shop to match the stock Hahn downpipe. The cutout is annoying and sticks down way to much, with no real way to shorten it up. This summer I would like to go with full 3" back if I find the time and money to do it.
