Low temp thermostat

Is there any benefit to putting a lower temp thermostat with the gm supercharger kit? Will it keep the engine cooler and be better for the supercharger???

well autozone and advanced auto parts sells them but i was wondering if it would be any benefit being that the computer doesnt turn the fan on until a certain temp and i wasnt sure if it would just be letting coolant in the engine sooner or if it would actually keep it cooler.......?????

as far as i know we already run a cool thermostat, no need to go any lower.

180 is stock. though it sits at 195.

get a LGO 160, grind the out side down so its as large as the LD9 one,

presto 160 LD9 thermo.

Why on earth would you say that?

Running a lower stat sucks in the colder climates when you're trying to get heat through the heater core to warm your stupid ass up while you gripe that you had to build a "race" car that you drove well into december. lol. (Been there done that)

The up-side is that you have a car that has cooler coolant running through it at all times, helping to combat cylinder temperatures. Cylinder temperatures being the first thing that shoots up with the addition of boost.

Seems to be why I run a cooler/modified stat. And it sure helped keep the engine a lot cooler, even on the hottest day at 20 psi the car maintains a slightly less than stock temperature range. That's with a stock rad/fan. Before i put the stat in the car ran almost 20 degrees hotter @ 15 psi.

I also added an oil cooler to help that end of things too... it helped with overall engine temps also.

Overall... it's a smart thing to do if it's a seasonal car. If not... yeah.... 25 mins to get hot air in late November isn't my idea of a party... though the sweet sound of 20 psi made up for it while I wore 3 coats....

i figured to have a better benefit would be to get the heat exchanger, plus like you say no heat for 30 mins would suck. and i didnt know there was one lower than the 180. my bad. i just knew we came with one lower than what the gauge reads. and i understand i have an eco and this is for a 2.4

Vince, any engine could benefit from cooler combustion temps.

The heat exchanger helps of course... so does an oil cooler... basically anything you can do to keep the engine in and around operating temperature after you add boost is a good thing. With every psi of boost dynamic compression goes up.... and compression = heat.

mine heats up just fine.

when i used Brians damn autozone 180 (on a warm day) \100 (on a cold day) it sucked.

with the modded LG0 160, its fine.

though it does sit at 168 or so.

or u can get a 180 and drill a very small hole in it....itll run damn cold but the hole is small enough not to run too cool

just keep in mind believe it or not the cooler you run the engine, the more wear there is on it. Yea the car will perform better, but it wont last as long. Just like everything else in the car world, there ups and downs. I would get an oil cooler instead. To me it would be more beneficial than a cooler stat. Keeping the oil cooler would keep its lubricating properties higher and help prevent carbon and sludge buildup. That and it would keep the engine a little cooler too.

horsepower is the force that determines at what speed you hit the wall, torque is the force that determines how far you take the wall with you after you hit it.

........

really? i have never heard that. is this why GM puts 180's in the LSj's? or 175's in the LB7\LLY duramaxx?

135K and still going on my Z-24.... boosted at 31K.

I have a 160 degree one in my car... i just went down to the parts store and asked for it.. dont have a clue what brand or any thing... dont know if it changed much as i had my car all retuned with the HP tuners right after which changed every thing around... but i know the old muscle car guys have been doing it ever since the start of time.. its probably the oldest trick in the book but it couldnt hurt

The First Twin Charged jbody
blue car (R.I.P) - 240whp @7psi..
silver car - 305whp 315lbs.tq @15psi (91 Octane) or 420whp & 425lbs.TQ @20psi (94 octane+Alcohol Injection)
All dynos run on a Mustang dyno

To a degree what you say is true, but oil needs to reach its operating temperatures as well. Colder cylinder temps work to an extent because, although colder air leads to less knock and more available oxygen in the combustion chamber, fuel needs warmer air to help atomize the fuel better which helps keep fuel from collecting on the cylinder walls, which leads to premature wear (liquid gasoline does not burn). Oil on the other hand does have a cooling effect on pistons, but colder oil is denser and leads to more restriction to moving parts (i.e. lower HP output).

I run a 160* thermostat, but I did that because Quads have issues with cracked heads. I get about 145* durring cruising right now in the winter months. Durring spring and summer, cruising is right at 160*. I don't think a 160* will be much of a problem, but if you aren't running into any problems with knock right now, I really wouldn't bother with it. Just run the stock 180*.
