Friends trying to build a turbo...

Well my friend's dad owns a salvage yard here in town, and got a hold of a 98' cavalier(5-speed 2200).
It looks like @!#$, but it runs fine.

What he wants to do is pull a turbo out of a junked Subaru in the yard, and get it running with the 2200.
He's gonna try one way or another, the motor has like 110,000 miles on it, the pain is crap and the rear window is busted.
So it wont really ever see a highway, but he owns a 99 cav, and if it works wants to use it on his cavalier.

Does he have a chance?
I know nothing of what turbo comes on a subaru.. I dont think he does either.
Its more of a "for fun" thing.

But will it even work?
He's got access(and the skill) to welders, torches, and just about anything and everything he will need.
I'm just doubtful on whether or not the turbo would run on a Cavalier.

What do you guys think?

it's possible, but if he's going to do anything more then use it as a yard car he'll need to performa fuel and ignition modifications to properly use the turbo on the car.

Also he's gonna need a flange adapter, Scooby's use a wierd 3 bolt flange, nothing like the Mitsu or Saab turbo's

Like I said he's just trying it out, see if it'd run.
He's going to fabricate everything he needs.
then he can use this as a base to build it for his street cav

Dude,

Here is the deal with Subaru Turbo's. I had bought a 2005 WRX STi turbo used with 10,000 miles on it. I was going to pay to have custom header made for it. But man i am telling you the turbo is small as hell and a waste of money. tell your friend to spend $500 on ebay and buy a logger and a cheap T3//T4 since this is not a daily driven car that he is relying on you cant go wrong and you will net WAY better gains than that small ass Subaru Snail

If you want to see a comparison of the subaru turbo next to a real turbo email me i have a picture of the 2 of them side by side. my buddy from Turbonetics said that there was a good chance i wouldnt see any gains from a turbo that small and restrictive.

just because you can doesn't mean you should.

If an sti turbo can flow enough air for 300+ hp on a 2.5L, it can make enough power on a 2.2 ohv to blow it up.

What turbo do you have off of what subaru model? a subaru sti turbo will be plenty enough for a 2200. And by the way i've seen 325WHP out of an STI with a factory turbo. You will have spool up like none other. I'd say for a fun factor do it and post some videos up!

The stock IHI Subaru turbo is plenty for a stock 2200, but for the effort involved in welding a manifold just for it, is pretty much a waste. If your friend's dad has Subi turbocharged cars in his lot, then I can assure you he has far more potent turbochargers lying around (i.e. Have him pop the hood of any 5.9L Cummins Diesel powered Dodge or any GM 6.5L Diesel).

I'm not sure what turbo it is, I know its off of a 9something outback I think, I really didn't pay close attention to it.

As of right now he's got the turbo attached to the manifold, he's running the piping today.
He's hoping to have it at least running by sunday.

In stock trim the car makes around 169.9whp @ 5750 RPM

WRX Dyno

While the STi makes 300 fly wheel HP.
