Cobalt charger on L61 solutions?
Friday, June 20, 2008 1:13 PM
I'm planning on buying an M62 from a cobalt ss, and piecing together the parts to put it on my L61. The little problems, like the SC pulley being for 6 rib belt, and the L61 pulleys 5 rib, the TB adapter that is only available from the GM Kit, how have these been solved? I'm think the LSJ intake manifold is will fit the L61 perfectly other than the fact of the L61 head bolts being 10mm and the LSJ's being 8mm or vice versa, is there a way to correct this?

Im going through the same thing right now. If you buy the parts used, you will be able to get the same type of kit for about half the cost. I got my blower, intake, idler pulley, tensioner pulley and a bunch of pullies for the blower from the junkyard for 500. The alternator bracket was cracked so I had to buy that from GM. As for the throttle body adapter, there is absolutely no way of buying it without getting the entire kit. Im actually beginning to make them. I posted a thread a few days ago seeing who would be interested and what not. If you want my honest opinion though, go with the kit because it has everything you will need. Unless of course you get a smokin deal on the parts and you are mechanically inclined. The kit isnt hard to install. Go to home depot with your stock intake bolts and get longer ones.

I have a blower lined up, do I need the SS S/C idler pulley, tensioner pulley, etc? I'm still in the researching stages, but I am planning on buying the blower and intake manifold from the ss s/c, purchasing the ZZP stage4 kit, Cobra heat exchanger, and using HPT to tune. I know I'm gonna need a load of other small things that are gonna be annoying to locate, but I'll deal with it.

Yeah you are going to need both the idler, and the tensioner off of the cobalt. you are also going to need the relocation bracket for the alternator. It wouldnt be a bad idea to get the alternator either because when you install the kit, your alternator is going to spin the other way. It will still function, however the cooling fins inside it arent going to be doing there job. So it wouldnt be a bad idea to grab that too. Is your motor built? Because if you go over 15psi, you are going to push the bottom out of it. The most people are running on there stock bottom end without meth injection is the 3.0 pulley which will put you at about 13-15psi depending on weather. You dont want to go over that. If you get the Tmap connector and wire it in properly, you will be able to run that pulley and you SHOULDNT (meaning everyones cars are different) have any issues. The heat exchanger is a must too if you are going to start running smaller pulleys because your IAT temps will be through the roof.

OK I need the idler and tensioner pulleys, but how do people solve the problem of the cobalt pulleys being for a 6 rib belt, and the L61 pulleys being 5 rib?

You don't need all that crap unless you want to pay extra $$

The only things you will need are the alternator braket, the SS crank pulley and a 6 rib belt from Napa ... and you don't need the SS AC compressor either. If you use only the stock tensionner with the proper belt your stock alternator will spin the right way ...
Your stock tensionner must be in good shape in order to prevent the belt from slipping.

Don't buy the GM kit ... it's a total waste of money.

It's not what I am saying.
Not sure about the stock AC and the 6 rib belt.
I am not using any AC on my cavy.
Only the stock tensionner, the SS crank pulley and a 6 rib napa belt.
You have to replace the stock 5 rib alternator pulley by a 89-94 2.8l cavalier 6 rib alternator pulley
It make a cheap, very reliable 6 rib belt setup and an alternator that spins the right way
It's working perfectly. In fact this car can be pretty fast if not fully loaded.

Seeing so little belt contact on that alternator frightens me.

I am running with this setup for near then a year now without any bad issues and it's my daily driver...

yes it's the stock tensioner, I am using a Micro-V Napa belt made by Gates.

I never had any issues with the alternator, the belt as very strong tension on the alt pulley, more then suffisant and it's spining the right way too...

Your tensioner must be in good condition.
