2.2 boost
Saturday, July 05, 2008 11:58 AM
Ive got a 2001 cavalier with the 2200 in it... i was debating for a while now either to go ahead with an engine swap (having an engine available for relatively cheap. My other option was to just boost the 2.2 and strengthen the valves and connecting rods and the works....what would be a better bet? Ive heard lots about how the 2200 is a trash engine to boost and tune but then again and ECO swap would be a big project in is own....any suggestions?

Whoever is telling you the 2200 OHV motor is a terrible choice for boost is off their rocker! These motors reportedly LOVE boost and want more and more. I cannot tell you from first hand experience, but word around here is they respond very well. The OHV motor was built to have more torque, throw a turbo into that high torque mix and you will get even more insane with the torque.

It would be cheaper and IMO much more rewarding to build up the 2200 rather than do an eco swap.

yea thats what i was hoping... I was looking into the eco swap and having to re weld the transmission mount kinda threw me out of doing it... thanks so much for the input ill look into the turbo kit for my car....on the side tho how much boost do you think it could handle if i changed the valved and pistons and connecting rods and the works... I know 6-8 PSI is safe for stock engines but with modification and proper tuning with the engine rebuilt....what could I push? is something like 10-14 PSI asking to much?

Well, if you rebuild it with forged pistons and connecting rods the sky is the limit, lol! I would say a properly built and tuned motor could easily handle 25psi.

This thread is just what I wanted to see I'm currently researching, hoping to start peicing a kit together in the fall when I have all the knowledge, and turboing another 2200 motor to drop in when it finished (To minimize downtime hopefully) Until then, expect lots of questions!

Ive had both and i went to the ecotec swap after about a year yes a 2200 can be built i know i built one John b can tell you the since he has most of my parts but right now the most Horsepower documented on a 2200 275hp by Adler which yes is badass. But now you can get an ecotec from a yard with a tranny and harness for lets say 1000 which is high put it in bone stock and turbo it and make the same power .Build that up and make 400hp-500hp Easy. Now of course this is my opinion there are many hardcore ohv guys on here its all about what you can do if you can swap it on your own go for it .If not keep the ohv, I actaully have a built block in the garage if your close to fl Has wiesco pistons, eagle forged rods, the high volume oil pump, polished crank, and the fittings ready for the oil feed.

Actually the most documented was 287whp/271 wtq and that was on a stock bottom end... I had over 300whp but never got it back on the dyno to prove.. Good things are coming though... Just wait!

P&P Tuning
420.5whp / 359.8wtq

I forgot about you 287whp/271wtq Like i said 2200 are not a joke im not an eco guy saying 2200 suck cause i had one. Pacoloco had 305whp on an eco on a stock bottom end also.Cant remember the tq numbers. But definetly i know once you build your now its going to be serious but you are definetly on another level with all your tuning abilities and such the average guy is not going to make over 300whp on a 2200.Anytime you come down to fl i have hp you can come tune mine

I'm only looking for 180-220 anyways, just something that will make it a bit more fun.
