How NOT to remove your m45 sc pulley
Wednesday, July 16, 2008 4:41 AM
After getting kinda frustrated trying to get a stripped screw out of my quickchange hub/2.7 pulley I decided to try a 3 fingered pulley puller. I tried one which wasnt working due to not being able to grab onto the pulley, I then tried another which was skinnier/longer and was able to grip the pulley better... a little too much lol. I wasnt even thinking about this when I did it, prolly from only a few hrs sleep in 3days lol. I ended up getting the pulley off the hub by tapped torx bits in the stripped screws which after trying a while finally got them out. Heres my stupidity...

And just incase anyone is wondering the pulley boys and smoothflow hubs are somewhat different. One is a bit thicker and requires bigger/longer screws. Im realy happy going to a 2.6 pulley from a 2.7, I saw a 3psi increase even in 90 degree weather. For those that say the 2.6 isnt safe without alchy, I have a coolingmist kit on the way

Im seeing a constant 8psi now as I was barely seeing 5 with the 2.7 pulley, and this in 85+ degrees. I cant wait to see how the meth does...plus nitrous

WOW!
It surprises me how much of a difference in boost everyone see's with there M45's. A friend of mine see' 6psi on stock pulley (no Alky), and in cool weather see's 7psi (no alky). He also has header and 2.5 exhaust with no cat.
Another friend see's 7psi on a 2.5 with no alky and header with 2.5 exhaust.

Got my cooling mist kit in, still have a few little bugs to work out but its definitely working. Its in a coupler which isnt the smartest but its only temporary until I tap my tb spacer; Im running a 50/50 mix of Heet and water. Still at 8psi but it feels faster, and the sc is cool to the touch after running it hard.

I had a few quick questions maybe you guys could help me out with..

Is it ok to mount the pump upside down with the relay facing down? Im using an L-bracket bolted on the strut tower and the way it is I cant quite shut my hood all the way. It still shuts fine cause its cf held down with pins.

Is it ok to tee the boost switch off the map sensor or somewhere else? I already have my boost gauge tee'd off my fpr and dont like having something else coming off it, or is the fpr the best source?

How can you guys tell exactly what psi the boost switch is at if using a manual one?

Thanks. Like said Ive got a few little bugs to work out but still a great mod.

with my 00 fire w/2.4L S/C kit I see a consistant 5.5 PSI of boost at WOT. On a cool night just over 6psi. Completely stock everything. Hope to get cat-back on this year and smaller pulley.

I'd avoid tapping the MAP if possible. Yet for the life of me I can't think of where mine is tapped lol. My relay is bolted to the exterior of the fuse box cover, not really that noticeable.

To test what psi the switch is set at you can run a piece of hose up to the windshield and check your gauge when the spray comes. Or you can do what I did

It's an LED, comes on when the pump energizes. As you can see, it's easy to tell what PSI you're at when the pump starts spraying.

I like the LED idea, how'd you do it? Also looks like your out of gauge space for your wideband

So does anyone know if its ok for the pump to be mounted upside down? Mine is now and doesnt seem any different, when it was mounted upright(relay up) it put a crack in the underside of my cf hood

Just an update... It felt like the alchy kit wasnt working so I tested it by running a hose up to the windshield. Took it for a drive and nothing; turns out the power wire for the boost switch had came off, fixed that and now its coming on at 1psi haha. Still seeing 7-8psi at redline even in 100 degree weather.

When I got the kit I forgot to say what size nozzle I needed so the default is an m5. Anyone think I should get an m4 or is an m5 fine?

No one mentioned how your elevation above/below sea level is what is determining your boost levels for you guys using the same size pulleys. plus meth/alky is not going to increase your PSI level, just allow for safer conditions when running more boost than your system can handle normally without detonating. I installed a sc kit on my friends 200X grand am 2.4l and a header back exhaust and he sees 8psi; colder plugs is all we have changed, and he has no A/F Problems, but we arent close to sea level at all

put a shot of N20 in there that will cool it down.
