What snail would YOU use for 600-650hp motor?

IF you were building a motor that intends to hit 600-650hp what turbo would YOU use?

-Trailblazer SS - not so custom 6.0L - custom intake - custom tune
- (1) 2.4L on an engine stand (1) blown trans (2) good quad trans (1) eco trans = party

I am far from an expert on this. I would use a GT4294R

call garrett and talk to one of their experts about your setup. just be prepared that you better know wtf you're talking about.

u could easily get 600-650hp out of a gt35r and also from a t4 p-trim 60-1. most garrett turbos are underrated. the gt35r can acheive well over 600+whp, ive seen as high as 650whp out of the gt35r. the t4 p-trim 60-1 can acheive 585whp which is more than 650hp. another good site is:

If you want to stick with a journal bearing, Borg Warner/Bullseye Power S366 with 0.83 or 0.91 AR T4 turbine.

borg warner is a good turbo lots of honda guys are using them, rob you should check out honda-tech go the drag racing and look at their forsale section in there you can steal slightly used turbos in there

You beat me to it, that was gonna be my suggestion. There's a tuner that made ~450 whp on the LNF with this turbo at relatively low boost (~25PSI, the PCM's limit). Run it up to ~35PSI and your all but at your goal on a 2.0L engine.

That's not how turbochargers work. Small street gasoline turbochargers aren't intended for that much pressure, and on a GT35R, if you look at the compressor map, you will be overspinning the shaft and be well out of it's efficiency. Street diesel turbochargers however ARE intended for high pressure. Regardless, efficiency islands and turbine speed are critical to choosing the right turbocharger for your application.

We can keep naming turbos here until we are blue in the face, but It would be best for you Spy, to look at different compressor maps to choose the right one for you. I found this a while back, it's far from perfect, but it should help give you a rough idea of the turbo that best suits your needs. Turbo Calculator

What a turbo can do and what turbo is best suited for are two different things.

The compressor map for the GT3582R, 0.70A/R shows that at a pressure ratio of 2.5, you'd still be well within the 78% efficiency island, and pushing close to 50 lbs/min. At a rough estimate, thats 450-550hp. A little short of the goal at hand, but thats not even being hard on the turbocharger...its suited for that horsepower range...

Pressure ratio refers to absolute pressure over ambiant pressure. Assuming 1bar or 14.7psia ambiant, for a 2.5 pressure ratio, that's only 1.5 bar or 22 psi of boost pressure. 35psi of boost pressure is about a 3.4 pressure ratio. Ever wonder why every compressor map starts at 1.0 and goes up? I'm assuming this is the map you are looking at GT3582R Comp Map. If you notice those curved blue lines, those are the speed of the wheels/shaft. In order to get up to the flow rate you want, you're starting to spin the shaft faster than it's intended.

Like Jeremy said, the GT35R is not an appropriate turbocharger for the application. Yes it "CAN" make the horsepower, but it's far from a reasonable choice. It's the same concept as telling someone to get a GT25 to make 300-350 whp. Can it be done? Probably. But it's not a good choice for the power level, unless you already own the turbocharger and just want to put it through it's paces.

I already have an idea narrowed down to 4 choices, and was curious whether people would mention them.

and as someone mentioned, yes things are afoot over here. Very interesting things.

Also no journal bearings for me. I fell in love w/ ball bearings. They're smoooooooooth.

Where does it tell you the maximum shaft speed? I'm not trying to be a smart ass; i just really don't see it. I see the map in the 78% island, and garrett's output specs of 400-600hp. It will be a bit short of the OP's goals, maybe the GT40 is better suited.

gt4088r
gt42xxr

those are definitely in the running.

the gt35 would be an option and may still be if I figure out I want to be in the low end.

Lately the 40 and 42 are what makes me smile. They are also just sexy to look at.

When this gets off the ground it'll be my first LD9 incarnation w the balance shafts ditched.

Im excited, like seriously over the top excited.

Big boy fueling, big boy turbo, decent engine management, under the radar platform...and if I get my way and dont bitch out.... WIRE TUCK!

do it all rob, the 35r or a hta 35r would be ok if you wanted to stay at 600-650 but i know you'll want more, 37r is a inbetween for 35 to 40, i would just be affraid running a 42r for 600-650 being a little to laggy without the rpm power band to use it, if it was a honda motor you could rev it out to 9k and still have a ok power band but, i also dont know what your plans are for your motor.

GT37R (t67 T04Z) is perfect for what you want also. perfect 700-750hp turbo and the ball bearing t67 has pretty good spool time too.

SpyhunteR: Whatever turbo you decide on, if it's listed on ATPTurbo.com gimme a call. I have an account with them and can save you a TON on their turbos!

Ask Joshua Dearman how much I saved him on his GT30 LOL.

what do you plan to do for the rods and stuff... from my understanding the eagle rods are at there max in the 700 area

Eagle and Wiseco parts are good to MAYBE 500 tops, more likely in the 400HP area. I know I won't be trusting mine to the 25PSI 500+HP abuse I plan to unleash on my car next year!
