Well i may or may not upgrade cams to the comp cams turbo grind... but i have a few questions... i plan on running about 9psi this season.
1. If i get the turbo cams, is it mandatory to upgrade the valvetrain and head? if possible am i ok with just installing the turbo cams? Rather not tear into the head this year just yet.
2. What are the major pro's? ive read it wakes them up big time in the power band and can also go higher... True/False
3. What are the major con's? ive also read that gas mileage is murdered once cams are installed... True/False
4. I will be tuned with HPT so tuning wont be a problem but is the cams worth the hassle? im content with the car being a mid 13 second DD but will cams REALLY benefit me that much. also if im doing cams, is there anything i should upgrade in the timing chain area? or whats the verdict on that?
5. Does anyone have any video's of the turbo ecotec cams at idle and driving or what not? i would really like to see and hear them before i commit....
thanks ahead of time for the help.
Vince, my car has had turbo cams just about since we started rolling around together, you've heard them. You can install the cams w/o valvetrain upgrade, but I don't think I'd do it that way. They do have a wider powerband and you will see an improvement in spool time along with throttle response. Haven't had the gas mileage change too much, still get roughly 26-30 on the highway city no telling I'm not even sure. Timing area will be perfectly fine. The only change that Camron and I have made are mechanical tensionors, that's just because of the 2 step more than anything.

That's about the best I can do for a Video for ya.

The turbo cams are .423(intake)/.419(exhaust) lift cams. Im not 100% sure, but i believe that the stock valve springs are only good to .360ish lift. I would replace the springs to be on the safe side and do away with the chance of the stock springs binding or floating the valves.

I wanted to know the same things. I also have the cams but never installed them don't want the stock springs binding or floating the valves.

like i said its still the speculation stage, anyone have any vids at idle of them? just wanting to know how smooth it is.
also whats the specs on the stock cam? anyone know? i looked in the sticky's and didnt see anything. just curious is all.
and links for valvetrain i guess. i just dont want it to lead from one to the other. from the cams, then the springs and valves, then the port and polish, then the pistons and rods, then..... i plan to rebuild in the future, but dont want to do it all at once right now...
I also have pondered about those cams...I would love to also just swap out the cams, but valve springs are should be done if they can't handle lift over .400
There is a tool that uses compressed air(shop air) to hold the valves up in the head, so you dont have to remove the head to swap springs. All it is, is just a small length of hose with interchangeable fittings on one end to fit different spark plug holes and threads. I dont know if it works with the eco or not, but i can find out this weekend.

You need upgraded valvetrain to run any of the comp cams. All of their cams are over .400 lift. While we had my stock head apart Todd and I measured the stock spring which coilbound at .300 lift.
HP tuners will do well enough for the cams, I was able to get my car to run fairly decent with the street/strip high rpm cams. Mine was a bit more tricky w/ the sc because it put more drag the motor at idle and wanted to stall on decel. I don't anticipate the turbo to have the same problem.

.300, wow, i guess i gave the stockers more credit than they deserved.

yeah my dad said he has the tool to compress the cylinder and then i can swap springs if i would like. and im going to have imphat/cavattack/2200 or whatever the hell ryan goes by on here so he will be seeing me in the spring
any links to recommended valve train? all i am seeing so far is on turbotechracing.
i just dont want this to lead to building the whole motor right now. im leading up to it and if i can do cams and springs, so be it. maybe port and polish the head and stuff next winter.
thanks again guys, lots of good info.
ps: karo sells the whole kit for $650, comes with
16 Large Outer Springs
16 Small Inner Springs
16 Titanium Retainers
16 Valve Spring Seats
16 Valve Stem Seals
16 Valve Guides
what you think? link here.

1. No
2. reduces spool time by almost 1000 rpms on mine, and I had a big t3t4 turbo, I saw a great gain in the butt dyno, and you can rev higher
3. No change in gas mileage on mine, because we retuned it
4. cams are worth it, especially the comp cams, I loved them... I would also upgrade valve springs but not mandatory
5. I do..
they are on street fire, look up turbo cav and look for a poster of nightmarexxx guy who rolled and then stole my cavalier...

I ran 460 lift on my secret cams made by colt for over 8000 miles never an issue... then the stage 1 cams by colt which were 400 lift, and never an issue, then the turbo comp cams at 18 psi for over 3000 miles never an issue...
maybe I got lucky
these cams were awesome.. PERIOD

These are the measurements from the stock eco springs and the patriot ones. The stock springs actually coilbind at .390 (subract the installed height 1.21 from last measurement). However the reading just before that would yield .300 for lift. Keep in mind that's still very close to coilbind and probably not safe. QBE I'm glad nothing happened to you while you were using them but if I knew this information I certainly wouldn't install them without better parts. Even the patriot springs are light duty for those cams. they coilbind at .553 however the safe range is probably more in the .400 lift range just like their website shows. The ecotect installed height sucks, its so low it takes away a lot of usable spring.
Anyways that's my .02, also when you buy springs check the diameters. You may need to modify the seat area of the head for a larger diameter spring.

A lot of members have had good experience with supertech valve train.

A lot of members on Cobaltss.net
like karo was saying, i need new retainers, guides and seals anyway so if i buy it all in a kit then there is no piecing it together and karo can get it all in one shot. compared to buying springs, then retainers, then tracking down guides...

That's what I've got. Didn't have any problems last year.

well i just bought them, not sure if i will use them this season or not, i would like to but still have to figure out valve train to use. im still debating.
the cams, probably going to go with the GM stuff. comes with EVERYTHING.
