I recently purchased a turbo from ebay. not a cheapo, its a custom made. its got a good, non ebay type manifold, a nissan turbo t3 with zero shaft play, tial wastegate, 6 psi spring, and 4psi spring, vortech fmu (adjustable), custom downpipe everything is here to make a non intercooled turbo kit for a 2.2/2200. I have been reading the faqs but they seem to be old... im looking to get some higher psi injectors for my 2200. reliable sources??? also if i run no intercooler, stock injectors, could i tune timing with msd and fuel with the fmu and get away with 6psi till i can get an intercooler? also for a first time boost guy whats going to be easier for me to tune im thinking hpt will be to complex for me, but i do have experience with msd. so im thinking fmu and msd will be good, but... i dunno, just looking for some tips / advice from boost users. please and thank you!!!
Ford Red top injectors with be sufficient enough for 5-9 psi, found online or at junkyards for under 80 i got mine for 30. I deff. would NOT run stock injectors ever, and I suggest tuning with hptuners or a reflash 3 bar map sensor if possible or both. You could also run an adjustable fuel pressure regulator found here turbotechracing.com with that FMU thats what I did. But I would deff hire a tuner to tune with hp tuner thats obv the best way to go. Also buy an intercooler you can find them cheap everywhere. Thats just my 2c
thanks for the help on the injectors ile have to search for them and see what i come up with. Im still kind of leary about using hpt tho... Because the thing is i like to do things myself but hptuners seems like it may take a bit of learning to get right, with all the ajustments and tables and whatnot. I have never used it before tho so i dunno what its all about... Anyone in my area care to demo it for me? i also dont want to pay to tune it because i will be making lots of changes along the way since it is a budget build and paying 300-500 per tune on 3 or more tunes gets a bit pricey especially when a new msd box is <500 and i have used it before so it would be easier for me and i might not mess up lol. So im faced with the stick with what i know or go to a more advanced system that might be better... But might be way worse? As i said maybe someone who uses hpt could give me the low-down on exactly how it works and how it would be better for my case... Thanks again
Well for now with your budget run the AFPR and the FMU and youll be fine i wouldn't worry about an MSD box at this point unless your running over 10psi..
Make sure you read this post
http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=40&i=160987&t=160987 on how your pcv works.. and the correct fix so you dont boost your crankcase
for now id like to run a modest 6psi MAYBE 7psi tops, on track only and drive arround town on 5-6. if i get any higher than 7psi i want to build my motor first, but until then 6-7 on stock internals is pushing it enough. i found those 30# injectors for a really good price at my local yard. the guy i got the kit from said he ran 5psi with no tune daily for like a year no problem. so im thinking i will be fine. the next thing on my list (after injectors) is an intercooler. then the motor gets built, and then 10+psi. i guess i wont bother with timing for now, but we will see how it goes. if it breaks then i know i should change something right!? thanks for the help and valued info.
wont my factory ecu still want to compensate for the added air and fuel?
with those injectors will i need a tune for them to work or do anything for me? i know i know i still have alot to learn. forgive my ignorance. i just want to make sure im doing things right...
its alright ask when you dont know or understand, fuel pressure is machanical, therefore when you have 32lbs injectors the pressure with drop, but you still need an AFPR to make it even lower. As far as the computer the ecu doesnt read boost it doesnt understand or know were the air is coming from so in sence thats why you want a tune. But for a small about of psi youll be fine.
well, now that ive had some time to do some research i have another question, regarding the fuel system. Why use both an fmu and fpr? From what i understand a fmu senses boost and raises pressure. A fpr doesnt sense boost and raises pressure mannualy... So why do i need both? shouldnt the fmu be enough?
You can run boost with a FMU, but it is not the best option. HPT is a better option. If using HPT no need for a adjustable FPR, and truly no need for a FMU (but you can use a FMU with HPT as well). HPT will allow you to control timing and fuel together.
The reason people will run a AFPR is when you add larger injectors and have no way to tune the ECU, the car can run crappy at idle(more fuel). Using a AFPR you can turn fuel pressure down to get a snmoother idle (less fuel). The FMU is use to add fuel under boost. They do have AFPR's that are 1:1 and add fuel pressure under boost. They also have FMU's that can control idle fuel pressure.
That was the way before HPT and other tuning options came out. It can be done with those but is a cheap way and a weak tune.
