need some serious turbo help

ok i need some help with my turbo setup, im running a t3/t4 ar50/63 oil cooled turbo on a 95 z24. when i first got the car tuned i could here this ultra high pitched whistle which i assumed was the bov, and i had another noise which was like shh shh shh shh at the same time as the blow off valve was releasing which i assumed was the wastegate(38mm), now the reason i say assumed is because i listened to clips on youtube and people have the same sound that i think is coming from my wastegate coming from thier bov. one night i was racing my budding in his awd g35 from a roll(35mph) and i left him pretty bad, the car was pulling really hard but after i shifted into 4th gear i realized i didnt hear that loud pitch whistle, so i tried getting into boost after that and all i could hear is the shh shh shh sound. i have been searching forums and google for hours and some say its compressor surge, some say its wastegate flutter, but i have not found anything definitive to tell me which it is. I had the shh shhh sound since the very first drive after the turbo was installed so its not like something broke and it happened. It only makes the noise when i let off the gas it does not do it at all when i am pressing the gas. The turbo still spools like it should but i get a backfire now also. since i didnt have the whistle sound anymore i ordered another hks ssqv bov and it is still not making the whistle sound, has anyone had a problem similar to this or know what my car is doing, i dont want to mess anything up.

are u still building boost?

horsepower is how hard you hit the wall, Torque is how far you push the wall with you

yes it still builds boost, and the turbo sounds just like it always did, not any louder and it seems to spools just as fast, im thinking the wastegate may be stuck open

if the wastegate was stuck open, you wouldnt be building boost the same as before.

how about some more info about your system......you gave us some turbo info,....is it internal/external W/G, what kind and size W/G is it? What type BOV? where do you have the BOV??

by your description it sounds like compressor surge/BOV problems, inproper adjustment of the BOV, etc. but without more info...cant help.

it is an external wastegate, 38mm, hks ssqv bov, the bov is in between the compressor and the intercooler, before the intercooler, on the pipe inside the engine bay right near the battery, the same pipe as urs in your pic but closer to the battery, and it only makes this noise when i let off the gas,

sounds like john is right sounds like compressor surge..... the bov needs to go as close to the throttle body as you can get it....

Yep, sounds like classic compressor surge. Co-signed with SLO CAV, try moving the BOV closer to the throttle body.

well the adapter for the bov is welded into the pipe so i cant really move it unless it gets rewelded, and the closest i could probably get it to the throttle body would be under the bumper, so are u guys saying the bov should come after the intercooler, does anyone have a pic of where their bov is mounted

x3 on compressor surge, just move your BOV and you should be cool.

I stole this pic from a friend just to help out, anyone who knows this car will know who it is right away. the BOV is on the lower right between the two red couplers, its on the bottom of the pipe.

Mine was right next to the TB. It's not attached in that picture, but the flange is there.

Will be in or near that same location in my upcoming build.
