Boost on an 04 Cav w/ AT
Tuesday, August 11, 2009 4:55 PM
Okay, by December I will be running a turbo setup on my 04 Cavi which is equipped with an automatic trans. Not sure which trans it is, but so far I have a massive Hayden Ultra-Cool 15"x12.25"x1" trans cooler and the trans is tuned with HPT to shift harder, faster, and cooler. As a daily driver will I need to do more to the trans for it to keep up? I won't be driving like a bat out of hell everyday, but yeah every once in a while I'll get on it to spank a C6 Vette or something.. (Lol, please don't doubt me on beating the C6, haha It'll be done.)

So yeah anything else I'll NEED to run smoother?
And do you reccomend any "ultra-cool" AT trans fluids?

I have that Trans cooler and you will need it. I'm auto and boosted and I have no problems with my trans. Of course its fully built(not 100% built tho) but enough for my power.

I recommend Mobile 1 synthetic ATF for the tranny. After 3 back to back passes at the track at the bash, my temps never got above 190 degrees.

I fully recommend the Team Green LSD insert as well. Check the Group Purchase forum for it.

we run a large cooler in the auto awd, along with royal purple fluid. and power brake the launches to 2,500rpm and 12psi. we havent seen problems. what are your power goals? and what parts are you going to be using?

My power goals are between 250-270fwhp, so appx 300hp motor. I'll be using a Garrett T3/T4 60 trim, a Tial external WG with a 3.9lb spring but with a TXS manual boost controller to run anywhere between 8-10psi at the track. 2.5" chargepipes, a MASSIVE FMIC (Dont remember the specs on it, but its as big as will fit.) Tial BOV, and a basic cast iron turbo manifold much like the one from the Saab 9-3s, this will be followed by a 3" turbo back exhaust with a deleted cat exiting via a 75mm inlet/115mm tip cannon of a muffler by Apex'i. The car will be tuned using HPTuners from Ecotec-tuning.com (Very reputable company, especially here in AZ. Steve (Senior Tuner) is a good friend of mine.) and also be equipped with an AEM EUGO Wideband. Any other questions? Any help is much appreciated.

you gonna use an FMU setup? otherwise, I don't see how you're fueling is going to work.

our ECMs are alpha-n, they don't compensate for load.. tuning a turbocharged car with alpha-n is a bitch and a half... people use FMUs to do course style fuel adjustments, and HPT to fine adjust that, but even then (from what I understand) you need tunes for different weather conditions and seasons..

if you want to fuel the car properly, look into something that references the MAP sensor (speed density). either megasquirt for fuel only, or use the GM reflash for the s/c ecotec.. but be warned, the reflash is locked and un-HPTable, and limited to 2.5bar

Well as far as fuel goes, I'm using a 255lph pump, SS Cobalt injectors, and a SMG Motoring AFPR. My buddie Aaron runs almost exactly the same setup and his car runs great and is HPT tuned without an FMU.

Paul, is this because he is automatic or this goes for both auto and manual? Reason i ask is because i talked to Fred Jr at SMG about tuning my saab setup for me and he told me that it would be easy. He said that i needed no help from a FMU just as long as it was a low boost setup 6-8 psi, like most saab setups. You are starting to get me worried, idk lol

why the SMG AFPR the aeromotive is cheaper and the real deal.

Matt, trans has nothing to do with it the fueling scheme is still the same... and I already explained why it won't work, you quoted my explanation.

I was just checking, i am still learning about this engine and i know i have alot to learn. In the last 4 years i been playing with my scion tc for a year and a half and before that for 3 years my 2.3 duratec ford focus up until it got totaled. Alot of the time i am working on my brothers SRT-4, he is always asking for my help and playing around with that. So my brain is a bit everywhere. It's fun though

A thing about learning also is, its hard to learn when you get alot of different answers from alot of different people. Here is a similar question that i asked about this a while back..

Matt Burgess wrote:Quick question about the saab setup. If you tune with HP do you still need the Cobalt SS T-map? Thanks

Here is the answer i received

BP (brandonpauli) wrote:no you dont need the t-map. hptuners cannot tune with the t-map. i have a list of almost all the parts you would need including part numbers and prices(i believe) somewhere saved on my computer from when i built my last setup.

BP (brandonpauli) wrote:no reflash, no t-map, no t-map connector. hp tuners will also require a wideband

These were questions regarding the saab setup.
