m62 supercharged and no a/c
Tuesday, September 29, 2009 12:46 PM
haven't really seen any threads on removing the a/c w/ the m62 setup. wanted to see what opinions are in doing so.

1) i don't have my a/c lines hooked up after engine build (rods/pistons)
2) it's colder now so a/c isn't really needed unless rains/snows
3) really should have a daily car anyways but no funds for that right now so a/c is sometimes needed
4) tho it was nice havin a/c in the summer as I wear shirt/tie durin the work week and makes long trips w/ the g/f more enjoyable, i've gone 1.5 years w/out it due to someone disabilin my a/c on first tune w/ the m62 and me not knowin until followin year as i thought i had a hole in my a/c lines somewhere (i'm not bitter, just thought it was funny afterwards on how simple a fix it was)

so if i remove the a/c unit

1) wouldn't be able to use the m62 idler pulley or tensioner assembly due to routing of the belt, cuz the belt would run back-to-back on the alternator on current belt routing. see pic below

2) running just the stock L61 tensioner, i would reroute the belt to go from crank to tensioner to M62 to alternator back to crank. this would spin the alternator in the correct coolin direction usin the L61 alternator. yes the current setup spins the alternator fans in reverse to L61 stock direction. see pic below

3) would the stock L61 tensioner put too much stress on the m62 pulley?
4) i would keep the alternator bracket in so it will push the alternator out a bit so the belt coming from the tensioner wouldn't be so close to alternator when goin to the m62.
5) then i would just need a single sided belt that is a bit longer than stock L61 belt

i've seen/read/saw sandrail/dune buggies run the m62 w/out a/c i'm sure so i figure this can be done in a cavy. i'm not doin this w/ weight reduction in mind, so let's not discuss "it's not heavy enough to make a difference" remarks.

plus turbo guys don't usually run a/c too so 2-3 years down the road when i go turbo, the a/c won't be in the way and saves time removin it now.

thoughts, comments, suggestions, do it already?

well, heres my input

im builldin up another supercharger install.
the route you mentioned i also thought of and the tensioner off the l61 wont keep the required tension on the supercharger, it squeaks under load due to not enough tension.

I ahve tried a couple different ways and the best is the normal setup and the a/c just spins, if its not turned on it just acts like an idler pulley. Its already there might as well leave well enough alone.

they had all kinds of idlers on the prototype ecotec supercharger to keep tension.
I know i tried a couple ways and the best solution was the lsj setup

Listening! As i'll be pulling my A/C this winter. Im really suprised someone hasnt made a idler kit to replace the compressor

there is reallt no need as the a/c compressor is just a big idler.

look @ te build book under the road race cobalts, they sure 1/2 the a/c compressor as an idler, its in a pic of the subframe

currently this is my set up , sowing a different way to run the belt

I have a different supercharger Idea I want to do and seeing these photos has given me a better idea for what I have planned.

Anyway, good luck with your no a/c SC install.

the added pic is from the prototype supercharger,

you just need to achieve a 3/4 wrap on the supercharger and alteast 1/2 wrap on the alternator

i think it would achieve 3/5 wrap on the s/c and a 2/5 wrap on the alt. i guess it's worth a shot. it's not like it's a pain to get to that lsj idler/L61 tensioner assembly or anything.

you can blame wheel 2 wheel for the belt routing , it works though

i posted the pic to help with ideas on different routing , since it uses the 2.2 tensioner

also has anyone thought of trying to make a 2.3 or 2.4 ac delete pulley work ?

i dont know where you would get the extra pulley, but i just used 97cavie24ls' diagram for an idea

anyone close to me have the a/c delete/idler pulley? i just dont think it would bolt up to the eco block. guess i need to put on my junkyard list the a/c unit and gut it.

if i'm goin to have to add a pulley i might as well keep the a/c in there and use it.
