Blk04Turbo's 400-450hp Ecotec Build....Questions & Opinions.
Tuesday, January 19, 2010 10:45 PM
Over the next 3-4 months, I plan on building my engine (04’ 2.2 eco) for a target of 400 whp. I have been looking mainly at Camron's (BoostedEcos) setup…as well as Skwirl’s, and Skunk’s builds as a loose base for guidance and ideas. I will ad my suspension/handling/wheel mods later, as this thread is just for the engine.

I am currently running the Hahn Stage II (w/ the S16G)
I know that the Super 16G Turbo can handle up to 400hp. I don’t want to be at the limits of the turbo, so I will be changing it to the Super 20G (which is good for 500hp)

The Hahn System will be fine for my power goals (minus adding a bigger Intank pump, bigger injectors, and a few odds and ends)

I know that through GM testing, and from what I’ve read on Jbody and the GM Buildbook, the following stock Ecotec parts are extremely stressed (to failure) at the following HP limits:

Connecting Rods: 250hp
Pistons: 300hp
Intake Manifold: 350hp
Camshaft: 400hp
Head Gasket: 500hp
Sleeves: 575hp
Crank: 600hp

I am keeping the stock Sleeves and Crank, as I will not be exceeding 500hp.

I looked into Jbodyperformance.com but they seem to be more expensive (even though they are canadian), so I will probably go through AllEcotec.com and get everything at once.

Here is what I currently plan on replacing/adding to my build:

Connecting Rods: Eagle Forged H-Beam

Do I really need Clevite 77 Bearings?

Will I be ok with using the stock eco valves and springs?
Do I need to upgrade to the ones below? (I can’t seem to find any info on Valve & Spring hp ratings)

Valve Springs: GM Racing Dual Valve Spring Kit (Ti Retainers, Spring Seats & Valve Stem Seals)

Valves: AllEcotec Stainless Steel Intake & Exhaust Valve

I might look into going with an aftermarket intake manifold (Air Forced 4 or something), but we'll see.

If anyone has any opinions what I should also include, or what I have on the list that is a waste of money for my power expectations, let me know. I'm open to suggestions.

I would use the "Forced Performance Green" Turbo
Is the super 16g the same as a big 16g?
Is it a MHI turbo or knockoff?
Thr FP Green has almost 50% more CFM than the big 16g.

no offence but i think you should think about the safety side of things before power. the suspension on these cars was not meant to handle that kind of power. the brakes are TINY and un-safe for that power level.

i dont know what you plan on doing with the car, weather it be legal racing or street racing, either way... you should upgrade the suspension parts either first or while you are doing the engine.

but, with that said... i wish you the best of luck and hope you hit you're goal. if i were you i would hit up karo at allecotec for most of the go fast goodies.

The build list seems adequate, but you could probably live with supertech 78lb valve springs with the comp turbo cams and save some serious money. The GM springs (ferrera i believe) are for higher lift applications.

I agree with Phil on the turbo selection, but i think the hahn s16g is T3 flanged on the exhaust side, and i don't know if the FP green would be a direct swap. Just something to think about. Both the FP green and the S20g will get you to your power goals, but i think the fp green will provide better spool up.

The LE5 intake manifold would be a less pricey yet adequate option for replacement of the stocker.

dont get ANYTHING from JBP. You will get scammed and the parts are made to break.

tell karo vincent morris sent you and he will hook you up REALLY well.

what are you doing for the head? stock head? port and polish? the only springs that have been tested and proven not to bind are the psi springs but you have to bore the spring seat on the head since they are larger.

also look into the racetronix fuel pump with the harness. you will need that too.

Pick up the 78lb supertech dual springs and retainers cheap and will work.

Yea I'm pretty sure also that Hahn uses the t3 flange. 20g will work fine.

And PSI isn't the only ones that work, i forget his name but the guy with the black supercharged sunfire is running the s/c cams with the supertechs just fine.

I am running the 78lb supertech dual springs and retainers as well. I got them at THMotorsports for around $335. shipped.

they still will bind lower than the psi's will. granted im reving the motor to 8000. Jon and Todd Miller tested springs and found the psi's to be the highest resistance to coilbind. not saying they wont work, just passing along useful information.

Phil L - It's a Mitsu 16G, but modified from Hahn Racecraft. I will look into the Forced Performance Green vs the S20G....depends on the flange style, because The t3 style exhaust manifold that I got from Hahn will be suffice for my whp goals.

y zyaaa - Sorry, I wrote that wrong. I already have my sways, mounts, and stickier tires.....They will be installed shortly. I need a couple other things as well. This thread is just for my engine build. But yes, handling mods are DEFINITELY a must, as our J's are horrible in stock form.

oldskool , ricardo, and others - Thanks! I will look into the Supertech Valve springs and the LE5 Intake Mani. Saving money is always a goal.

Vince - Thanks for the info about Karo. I'm definitely going with the Racetronix pump....this inline is making weird sounds, and is INSANELY loud. I think that a good strong pump intank will be better, and have less parts to fail.

For what it's worth, your power goals are very similar to what we had the Sunfire at back in 05 I believe.

Our engine build consisted of:

Eagle Rods
JE pistons (don't remember exact compression but i believe .20 overbore)
Ferrea Valve Springs (Valves floated at 21ish PSI with the Super 20G)

Standard Hahn RaceCraft Turbosystem with these upgrades:

Super 20G
PortFueler

It's surprising just how little you have to do to these motors to get them to work with you. Even our 750 HP version of the engine had stock valves and no porting (granted we at its limits for airflow at those numbers). Glad to see another Ecotec soon to be making some power =)
