Boost controllers!! What are you running?
Wednesday, February 03, 2010 3:56 PM
I'm in the market for a new manual boost controller.. Right now I'm running an older Hallman manual controller but it would act fickle when trying to make more than 10psi. Basically I would get my 10psi and continue to turn in small increments... and then it would jump to 17psi and I could never get a good inbetween boost level.

So what are you guys running? Ebay has cheapies that are tempting but I do enjoy quality and good adjustment. I REALLY dont want to spend alot for one however. I know I know.. Cheap and quality never go hand in hand!

Just start poking holes in your wastegate line, i hear every hole adds 1 psi...

if youre having issues Jay try running a 10 psi wastegate spring, or adjusting your wastegate swing arm so your wastegate is set at a higher PSI and then start fom there. I had the same hallman you did and I loved it

Used to use a Hallman, switched to GReddy PRofec B Spec II, LOVED IT, but had to sell it. Now running a simple ball/spring but with a secondary blow-off valve without vacuum hookup, adjusted to act as a pressure relief valve to fully eliminate boost spikes. Adjust the controller and the relief valve properly, and you have a nice flat boost curve.

Well, I started off with a turboXS HPBC and was very very very consistent and accurate... I later switched to a dual stage TurboSmart and didnt have good results... it was very inaccurate and inconsistent... one pull its 7.5 next pull it was 9.5psi... the boost would bounce up and down as well... keep in mind I have a digital boost gauge so it reads to the tenth... I hated that thing, though I must admit it showed much much better consistency on "high" than "low"... Now I run the turboXS dual stage HPBC... and this controller is money.. always consistent and doesn't flucuate like the TS... source was from compressor housing... about 12" high grade silicone line in and out and zip tied so it had no excuses for its behavior.... the controller got sent back to T.S. where they found nothing wrong with it and blamed me over and over for improper installation, or "something must be wrong with your setup"... I laughed and told him that I would be going with a TurboXS.... He hung up on me...

Forgot to update this.

Running a Hallman Pro RX with stiffer spring. Seeing 14psi very nicely and adjustability is great.

Only downfall is that this controller is large. I found a nice spot to mount it with supplied bracket. Pics soon.
