Homemade Race Fuel

Anybody heard about this? It's been around for quite a few years. Some of the prices may be off but you get the idea. Some of these items can be found at your local paint store, lowes , home depot, etc...

Formula #1 - Toluene
R+M/2.........114 octane
Cost...........$2.50/gal
Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
10%...........94.2 Octane
20%...........96.4 Octane
30%...........98.6 Octane
Notes: Common ingredient in Octane Boosters in a can. 12-16 ounces will only raise octane 2-3 *points*, i.e. from 92 to 92.3. Often costs $3-5 for 12-16 ounces, when it can be purchased for less than $3/gal at chemical supply houses or paint stores.

Formula #2 - Xylene
R+M/2.........117 octane
Cost...........$2.75/gal
Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
10%...........94.5 Octane
20%...........97.0 Octane
30%...........99.5 Octane
Notes: Similar to Toluene. 12-16 ounces will only raise octane 2-3 *points*, i.e. from 92 to 92.3. Usually mixed with Toluene and advertised as *race formula*.

Formula #3 - Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether (MTBE)
R+M/2.........118
Cost...........$3.50/gal
Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
10%...........94.6 Octane
20%...........97.2 Octane
30%...........99.8 Octane
Notes: Oxygenate. Very common in octane booster products. Has lower BTU content than toluene or xylene, but oxygenate effect makes the gasoline burn better and produce more energy.

Formula #4 - Methanol or Ethanol
R+M/2.........101
Cost...........$0.60 - $1.75/gal
Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
10%...........94.3 Octane (Methanol)
10%...........94.7 Octane (Ethanol)
20%...........Not Recommended
Notes: Methanol is wood alcohol. Ethanol is grain alcohol and found in Gasohol in 10% ratios. Both alcohols are mildly corrosive and will eat gas tank linings, rubber and aluminum if used in excessive ratios. Main ingredient in "Gas Dryers", combine with water.

Formula #5 - Isopropyl Alcohol and Tertiary Butyl Alcohol
R+M/2.........101
Cost...........$0.60-$1.50/gal
Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
10%...........94.5 Octane
20%...........Not Recommended
30%...........Not Recommended

Notes: Similar to Methanol/Ethanol. Isopropyl Alcohol is simply rubbing alcohol.

Sample Mixture
To make your own octane booster, it is easiest to make up a large batch, and then bottle it up in "dosage-size" uses.
Below is the basic formula of one of the popular octane booster products. To make eight 16 ounce bottles (128 oz = 1 gal):

100 oz of toluene for octane boost
25 oz of mineral spirits (cleaning agent)
3 oz of transmission fluid (lubricating agent)
This product is advertised as "octane booster with cleaning agent *and* lubricating agent!". Diesel fuel or kerosene can be substituted for mineral spirits and light turbine oil can be substituted for transmission fluid. Color can be added with petroleum dyes.

The trans fluid could be substituted for Marvel Mystery Oil
There is some debate about the mineral spirits being used.

If this is illegal feel free to delete it. I'm just passing on some useful information I found freely on the internet on other forums. Some of the bigger power guys on here are paying rediculous amounts for higher octane fuels. Have fun, be careful , don't inhale , don't spill on paint, ventilate properly . I am not responsible for unqualified people's idiot mistakes.

i have heard of it. but the people i have talked to about it claim its not as stable or consistent as just buying race fuel. plus the simple safety factor of buying vs making. i mean what your going to spend for the amount you use, its more worth it to just buy the race gas.

F.Y.I. This is nothing new in other car forums as you will see below in these links . I have never seen anything posted on the org about this so I thought I would educate some people of the potential to increase the octane of your fuels. And the reason this is in the boost forum is because that is the only people who warrant higher octane fuels in such a way. I wouldn't show it to anyone with a stock car but that's up to you guys . Their not worthy of such fuels and all they would be doing is polluting for no reason . Some of us actually need higher octane fuels and cannot get it. Keep it on the dl.

I totally understand the safety factor Vince. In a safe and responsible way I think it may be a viable alternative to people who want to experiment and not spend the 6 or 7 bucs a gallon. Maybe they could save a few bucs or so . Lets see if anyone is willing to do some lab work lol.

Ive run Xylene before in my car for @!#$s and giggles.

I have no findings to report since it was tuned at 91, but it was a hot race day so I figured why not take the extra step.

Ran fine, slight sweet smell out of the exhaust like you would get with race fuel.

I would warn against mixing in the transmission fluid and mineral spirits however.

I have always thought about doing something like this....also because at my work I have access to Toluene and Xylene in rather large quantities for personal use for free.

yeah i mean the amount of times you need it, unless you run it all the time. it seems safer, easier, to just go to the pump.

I've got 100octane & E85, on the pumps out here. Really no care.

-Trailblazer SS - not so custom 6.0L - custom intake - custom tune
- (1) 2.4L on an engine stand (1) blown trans (2) good quad trans (1) eco trans = party

A guy down the street from me used to mix water in with pump gas to remove the alcohol from it. Once the liquids seperate remove the gas and still be 100% legal in spec classes yet have the slight advantage of no alcohol. He also told me about using toluene several years ago and said that it was quite effective.

Separation would be a big concern for anyone who seriously considers blending their own fuel. But, with Rokett Fuels & VP making blends that are more "In-tune" with the needs of specific types of build-ups... what's the point?

As for high-octane lead-free fuels with a high toluene of xylene content...Lemme tel you something:

My buddy had a '87 GN years ago that went 11.80 with simple bolt-ons & minor mods otherwise. He ran Turbo-Blue while at the track (It had tetra-ethylene lead to it, but his cat was deleted by the dealer & he got a cap-style "test-tube" in it's place) and was forced to change the EGOS within a week... after he fully ran the last of the "blue" outta the car. But that's not my point... This is: For everyday, he filled the tank with CAM2 108-octane unleaded. It had no complaints but every month he had to change the EGOS because the stuff... even after it was burnt... ate-up the platinum coating on it.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".
