I just picked up a garret 48 trim turbo and was wondering if anyone knew any of the specs on the turbo. Max hp? Max boost? The turbo sat for a about a month and there is some shaft play. Not much but when you wiggle it with a good force it is definately there. It is mostly side to side and there is a tad of axial play. Is that acceptable or does that indicate new turbo. Thanks!

if it's a real garret just type the numbers that are on the tag located on the cold side housing and you should get all the info you want.
The HP numbers are probably around 350-380... I was thinking of picking up a 45 trim and it's good up to 350 hp. What's the ar???
"You can only feed them semen for so long before their legs fall off."
There is no stamp on the cold side it just says aireasearch. On the hot side it says garret and has specs right by the bolt flange. Says
M-4
Pt-1
Ar .48
I have one of the junk ebay turbos and the casting is nothing like it so I don't believe its fake. I would actually feel safe with how nice and heavy duty this casting is compared to my ebay terdbo

You sure it's a 48 trim?? Never heard of that size trim. .48 is in relation to the turbine, not the compressor
"You can only feed them semen for so long before their legs fall off."
I thought the a/r was the trim? How would I check for the trim
running rich? turn the boost up
ar and trim are completely different measurements. ar is the housing size and trim is the wheel size.
you have a 48ar exhaust housing with most likely a t3 inlet flange which should spool quickly on a 4 cylinder engine.
i would need measurements to calculate trim. the compressor housing should have an ar number casted into it just like the exhaust housing.
Alright. There looks like there was a stamp on the cold side but its missing. And there is 2 numbers embroddered on it but they are worn and I can't make them out. What would I need to do to mease the compressor wheel

You would need to take apart the turbo and measure the inducer and exducer. I doubt you wanna do that though. Go to Garrett's website and check out their turbo tech 101, 102 and 103 sections. Has a lot of info.
"You can only feed them semen for so long before their legs fall off."
and by take apart the turbo he means loosen 6 bolts. lol
- You loosen the 6 bolts on the turbine housing and the turbine housing will come off. It may only be four bolts if it is a straight t3 turbo. There are no gaskets to screw up or anything so don't be worried. It's actually simple.
- With the turbine housing off you will see the turbine wheel.
- Measure the diameter of the inducer using a caliper. (the inducer on the turbine wheel is the widest part of the wheel, it is where the exhaust gases will first flow into the turbine.)
- Measure the diameter of the exducer using a caliper. ( the exducer on the turbine wheel is the narrowest part of the wheel, it is where the exhaust gases will are expelled from the turbine.)
Trim =
inducer^2
exducer^2
The trim is calculated the same for the compressor wheel but the inducer become the narrowest part of the wheel (where the intake charge will first flow into the compressor) and the exducer is the widest part of the wheel (where the intake charge is expelled form the turbo)
The trim of a turbo is generally listed using the trim of the compressor e.g. T3T04E 57 trim has a 57 trim compressor wheel.
FAIL points to me. ha! Yea, it's probably just 6 bolts. Same bolts you use to clock the turbo... Pics???
"You can only feed them semen for so long before their legs fall off."
exact same bolts to clock the turbo. Just keep loosening them.
I don't have any pics on hand but I just received my turbo back today in the mail. I have to re-install the turbine housing as I shipped it without it to save weight, so if I remember I will take pics and post them.
Only problem is I don't have a caliper at home though. Maybe this can be an excuse to buy one.
Also, in regards to the shaft play.
Side to side shaft play you can deal with as long as it isn't so bad the the wheel does not hit the housing. If it can hit the housing you motor may become fubar'ed when pieces of the wheel going flying into the combustion chamber. If it doesn't hit the housing you are still good but will have to rebuild in the future.
In and out play is not good. Time to rebuild now.
On the upside, your turbo can be rebuilt for $150USD. So, that's not too bad and you will have a fresh turbo with warranty
Oh, i was asking if he has any pics of his mystery turbo...can maybe tell what turbo it is.
"You can only feed them semen for so long before their legs fall off."
Yea. I got 4 pictures of it but I'm on my phone and won't be home. Ill be sure to post when I get home in like 5 hrs so we can get to the bottom of this! The in and out play is so minimal you can't barely even feel it. The side to side doesn't contact at all and there is no signs of contact ever. Ill take my turbo apart tomorrow and let you guys know. I was told it was a 60 trim but I mean craigslist is full of lies so I want to know for sure. Thanks!

60 is pretty damn big! Pushing lots of air with that turbo. I would not put that on a stock engine if it is a 60 trim.
"You can only feed them semen for so long before their legs fall off."
Yea. I had a 63 before and sold it but this turbo is ypretty small. Could it be pretty small with a big turbine?
running rich? turn the boost up
I think you had a .63 ar before. .48ar is pretty good for a street car. That's the same size turbine they use on the Turbonetics Super 60 I believe. ANYWAYS...yeah, try to get some more info on the turbo if ya can.
Also, you dont want a large turbine with a small compressor side. Kind of defeats the purpose IMO.
"You can only feed them semen for so long before their legs fall off."
sh!t. noob question, how in the hell do i post pics
running rich? turn the boost up
get a photobucket account and copy and paste the address under the pic and there is a little picture icon at the top of the box on here you type in and you click it and put the address in that.
The inducer is 60mm and exducer is 46.5mm on the intake. The hot side exducer is 45.5 and inducer is around 36mm
running rich? turn the boost up
based on your numbers i am coming up with
compressor side- 60 trim
exhaust side -62 trim
Really? Wow I'm suprised because its pretty small but thanks a lot! That made my day. How much hp should that be good for?
