Boosting the LN2
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 3:32 PM

Yeah heres another thread about boosting the LN2 , ive been reading and reading.. And well , i cant afford 3000$ to boost the J. I have a spare motor with 150k on it which ive currently got torn down and waiting to be rebuilt. If i was to keep the stock bottom end and play with 8psi what're the chances i get a couple years outta it? I'm not swapping for an ECO just before someone mentions it. I'd like to take the head in to get a PP this friday but before i do im wondering " what else i should do to the top end before attempting 8psi ". If anyones willing to shine a little light in the direction i need to head that be great. I already got the turbo , intercooler.

Most importantly it comes down to the tuning. If you set it up right it can last, but you have to set it up correctly. You will need larger injectors, which means TOP feed swap.

It takes some work.

I might get there eventually. It has been a long time plan for me. And it's not like I don't have the tools or ability, It just takes that much planning and research imo to get it almost trouble free.

You have a '97? You need an LD9 disclaimer pronto!
For 8 psi you need NO internal work, just a top-feed conversion and tuning like John said (although technically you don't need top-feed if you go to Saturn TBI injectors).

What model are these on?

Edit: Never mind...I remember hearing about these. Wasn't there something about the J pcm not being able to run these?

Early 90's Saturns that had TBI had them. They're pretty hard to find, and make sure you bring your torx wrenches to get them out.
They flow A LOT. Think about it. They have ONE injector to run an entire 4-cyl.
The only person running them that I know of is slowolej, and that's on a heavily modified OBD1 ECU.
I do have a set that I'm hoping to use with a megasquirt in a future project though.

you said your engine is being rebuilt. why dont you just add some pistons and rods since your already into the engine and go boost crazy? you still will need a tune, pump and injectors for 8 psi so the only difference is your going to need larger injectors and the little extra cost of the engine parts. just a thought.....

I'm still in the process of deciding if i should go along with it. Some honda driver whos boosting and apparently " Knows his stuff " told me it aint worth boosting with stock rods as it'll blow up " In the first week " as he put it. I'm looking at my options but still would like to give it a shot.

Your reply should be something like, "STFU.... You drive a Honda......"

Ahem? Apparently he's never seen the LN2 rods next to the d-series (I'm guessing, he doesn't sound very well-versed). Maybe I'll take a pic; the difference is incredible. There's a reason nothing from a D15 to an H22 from Honda will survive a decent hydrolock, but the LN2 usually keeps on chugging away.

No doubt our motors rods are alot beefyer! I'm not all that afraid to chance it as i have 2 motors regardless.. I can have my J outta commision for as long as needed and drive my womans 97 GT which she just bought.. I made her fall for the J's. .. Just a big debate right now if i should hold off , take my time and order the Wiseco Pistons and rods.. Which would probabaly be the smarter thing to do? Like i said all im looking for is something i can run in the summer as a DD and run it safely at around 8psi. On a side note we all know the LN2 N/A can eat D15's all day.. I also was able to put to shame a cocky ricer in a 2001 Civic SI " V-TAKKK " .. Sure they have the advantage to unlimited aftermarket parts , but they're EVERYWHERE. Which is one reason i like my car so much , we can make power! But just have to actually use our brains to get there.

So what turbo setup are you using? I have a 96 2.2 and I wanted to do a turbo setup eventually. I don't want to swap because of all the extras that you have to get. I wanted to swap out my pcm for a 98 pcm so I can use HP tune but I think I will need the main harness for that.

Yeah, just 3x the cost of my first setup...

Go '97 PCM. It will be easier.

Dropping the head off monday morning for valve seals , plain and polish. Everyone keeps telling me i shouldnt bother spending the extra money on porting? What is your opinion for a turbo application? Should i bother. My gasket set is also gonna be ordered Monday. Should i use a beefyer head gasket? I'm assuming the answer is yes. Just a little update on my plans. Regardless i think il see what i can find for a head gasket that would better suit my plans.

If you have the $$$ or patience to have it ported, and the head is coming off anyway, then go for it.
A cometic gasket would be nice, but more important is using ARP studs.
