Heat Exchanger
Wednesday, May 12, 2010 7:59 PM
I recently supercharged my Eco with the GM kit and am now looking to install a nice heat exchanger set-up. I have reviewed many useful forums about this topic. I'm looking for a nice H/E that will fir properly and have no fitment issues. Does anyone know and specific measurements? The post by evilmonkitar was quite useful indeed. I need a lot of other parts as well.

How does this one look?

Thanks Everyone.

Thats what I'm getting its the biggest baddest one on the market, but its made for a cobalt, no idea if that would fit a cav, but they give you measurements there, you should be able to take a tape measure out to the car and find out

I looked at that one and is the biggest that i know of. The main thing i dont like about it is the drain valve. I saw myself snapping it off on the roads around here.

I just bought the ZZP S3 H/E(for the Cobalt). It is shorter and thinner than the OTTP one, but doesnt have to drain valve. The length is the same between the 2.

This is it compared to the Cobra H/E that i originally had on the car.

I chose the ZZP over the OTTP mainly because of the drain valve and me not wanting to break it off. They both also claimed to be dual pass, but not seeing a weld separating the inlet/outlet gave me a little doubt.

The ZZP is also very easy to mount. They have tabs welded on the back of it so all you need is to drill 2 holes in your bumper and bolt it to it. The only thing i had to trim/modify was the water lines to the H/E because i was running the single pass Cobra unit 1st.

I dont know of any J-body running the OTTP unit and as far as i know Jbod04, slvrblits, and myself are the only ones running the ZZP. CXRacing and Mustang Cobra units seem to be the most popular(they are smaller).

Overall i am very happy with the ZZP unit and my ricer butt dyno says that i did get a gain over the Cobra unit.

The zzp s3 is nice...very nice...and fits with no issue only thing needed to install was two washers and two sheet metal screws (I also put rubber washers between the washer and bumper which can all be purchsed at a hardware store). On my original install I followed evilmonkitar's post (why isn't it a sticky yet I don't know) and just did things slightly different to my liking.
Overall measurements of 32.5x6.5x2.25
Core measurements of 28x6.5x2.25

in combination of up grading from a Cobra HE to the S3 and a larger TB combinded with a tune I was able to pick up another 15whp.

Before when I upgraded to a 62mm tb and cobra HE with just the GM reflash I was able to pick up 7whp.

What is the difference in the S3 from zzp and the one from OTTP...acutally zzp also offers(or at least used to) the same one that OTTP does and yes it is cheaper. However the S3 is something like 8lbs lighter and over all is better built vs the other one from china.

Definately get a HE no matter which one you pick...ultimately though you will want the big shiney S3.

Has anyone used this setup as mentioned in evilmonkitar's previous post?

"bought a lightning intercooler pump from ebay for about 100 shipped
had to get the wiring for it, was about $30 from a ford dealership"

is it the 03+ that need to modify the bumper? or are you talking about the support too?

what ever you want to call the big metal thing that my heat exchanger sits under..I cut the back tabs off of the hea exchanger so that it would fit underneith the big metal thing and is screwed into it also.

big metal thing=fail...lol

The S3 is freaking awesome. If you bend the mounting tabs on the rear a little bit, you can use all of the brackets that comes on the heat exchanger. It's amazing how cool it keeps the charger.
A friend of mine on another forum has the OTTP on that you posted, and I think he plugged the drain on it. That's the main reason that I got the S3 also. And besides, it looks so mean behind the bumper

The lightning intercooler pump is the same as the cobalt one. I got my pump off OTTP brand new, and the connector for it from frozenboost.com. You need this if your planning on running the H/E

Big metal bar that the H/E is bolted to = bumper, the plastic cover is just that a bumper cover. I didnt modify any part of the bumper cover or the support foam.

What he said. I drilled into my bumper and tapped the holes, threaded bolts with loctite into holes, done deal.
