big power and flywheel.............
Wednesday, May 26, 2010 3:58 PM
im making good power on my turbo setup and for some reason my clutch went so they are fixing it all at their cost.

my question though is...............

when i bought the car it had a spec flywheel in it and has been great with no issues. when i did the built engine/lsd install i bought the new clutch and got the new friction plate for the flywheel and installed.

now with the situation should i swap to a stock flywheel or keep the spec in it and just replace the friction plate again??

Well, the stock flywheel might help you build boost quicker since it will put more of a load on the engine, but I doubt it. You are probably better getting the friction surface replaced.

Stock flywheel for sure..... Spec flywheels suck!

Stock. Far better than the Spec/Fidanza.

since he has had no issues with the spec then maybe he should stick with it other than guys coming in and saying spec "sucks" unless you have a legitimate reason then maybe hop off the spec "sucks" bandwagon for a bit. that wasnt just targeted at just you ryan but im sure the whole brigade will step up soon enough, im usually on it too but for their clutches, flywheels have been good to me personally. Clyde, why is stock better?

if the flywheel was working out for you and spec manned up and got you a new clutch on their cost then id stick with your current setup.

I would use the stock flywheel. Less chance for things to break.

This happened at 4500 RPM on a sub 300 WHP build. Resulted in a tow home, being late getting back to school for orientation (almost got me thrown out of the program on the first day), and a later found crack in the transmission on the bell housing side of the diff.

There are many other of these flywheels that have failed in the exact same way. Some at relatively low miles and others with a few on them. mine had roughly 17k on it. After switching back to a stocker it smoothed out my idle issues, provided a much more consistent take off, just about eliminated my 2.4 stall issue, and gave me a hell of a lot of piece of mind.

The SPEC clutch in the picture didnt go back in and its a damn good thing. I didnt notice it then but later on I found that one of the hub springs was wearing through the hub and is about to pop out. I lost all respect for SPEC as a company when I sent them an email just to let them know that this happened. The response was rude and their BS claim of it being an isolated incident can be quickly proven wrong with a search on this site.

I currently have a SPEC clutch in my 02 (has been in there for a few years) but the next time I have the trans out (probably for a new engine) I will not be reinstalling it. I feel that for the power levels I am going for, a stock clutch will do just fine. Wont have any more inconsistent engagement, annoying chatter, and my pedal wont be on the damn floor anymore.

Sorry for the mini rant.

it seems, iirc only 2.4's have the flywheel issue, which is a shame, I love my aluminum flywhel

I have a Fidanza Flywheel on my 01. It has been great and I plan to keep it. I will likely stay with a Spec clutch when my build comes to life as well. They have worked great in any car I have put them in.

I currently have a flywheel from a W41 in my car. Its identical to a 00+ Getrag flywheel for a 2.4.

I ran a spec flywheel on my z24. I liked it.

But seen too many people who's car decided it didnt want the flywheel attached anymore so it made me nervous.

Identical as in dimensions & weight, or is it a bit lighter?

Good info non the less!

Identical as in with the two next to eachother you cant tell. I only know its my buddies W41 flywheel because of the chunk of fiberglass resin I had to remove. My stocker didnt have any resin on it while it was in his garage. Im sure they both weigh the same.

C&P from the other SPEC discussions...my personal experience...

I have a little input on SPEC...

previous owner installed a stage 2 and worked well, some slipage from time to time and inconsistant pedal feel/engagement. well now since I am going have some more power I brought my clutch into Lakehead Clutch & Brake (great company, look them up) had them test the pressure plate to see if it could hold the power. They called me the next day to tell me that the pressure plate was stock, thats right, STOCK CLAMPING FORCE! So they said the would put a second diaphragm in it to double the clamping force, so for a dual diaphragm pressure plate and a nasty 4 puck that will hold anything up to 500hp they only charged me $450.

So I then call SPEC...

"yes, can you tell me the stock clamping force of a 2002 Cavalier?"
"no sir, I do not know that information."
"ok, can you tell me the clamping force of your stage 2 clutch for that same car?"
"no sir, I cannot divulge that information to you"
"why?"

he just kept saying that he cant tell me that information after that...never, NEVER, buying a Spec clutch...

Spec stage 3+ spec aluminum flywheel...

many 12 sec passes later... upping the power this year, no problems so far.

this thread has nothing to do with a spec clutch at all

questions were all pertaining to the spec flywheel

I would actually go with the stock flywheel if I were you just for ease of driveability. Also I don't think the risk outweighs the reward.

What clutch are you using just out of curiosity?

i use a bully stage 4 and it is amazing compared to the spec, not searching for clutch engagement, no chattering, pedal feels like stock

an amazing clutch with unsurpassable customer service, frank and pat are who i deal with usually and they are top notch to say the least
