Top mount intercooler?

Just a thought, I have always liked the top mounts that are on the nissan puslar gtir with the sr20 in it. Has anyone ever done a top mount set-up in our cars, is it even possible??

I wouldnt think so. Our hood clearence is low and I think it would heat soak way too fast

Ford tried it years ago with the SVO Mustang & the Thunderbird Turbocoupe... Now look where they're putting it on the new Taurus SHO.

My bestfriends rx 7 is top mounted, he don't have any problems with heat soak. I'd say try it out, the biggest part would be fabricating a hood that's func and looks good.

A big reason for the top mount is packaging and cost. With a top mount, you can run less piping and don't have to spend the extra design time trying to figure out how to run a pipe all the way over to the side of the car (or even the front) and back to the throttle body. Lots of guys with side mounts and tops mounts upgrade to a front mount (like STI's and DSM's.) Unless you are doing it to be "unique," you will save yourself both time and money (as well as increased power) by going with a FMIC.

Yeah to me it would seem as if hood clearance/appearance would be the issue, as already mentioned.

Holy multiple post Batman.

TMIC is not worth it, just do a front mount and make it easier on your self while getting more hp gains.

That's an 2nd-gen RX-7... That thing already has limited space before the radiator, and tons above the "Crankshaft" centerline.

There is a neon green Sunfire from Brazil, if i remember correctly, with a top mount from an old Shelby Daytona or GLH omni.

It is mounted were the airbox and battery used to be. The under hood fuse box was moved under the intercooler. He was running 8psi if I remember correctly.

He also had a splash guard setup for any rain water to run behind the headlight to the ground. It was on the LN2 motor though......

TMIC will help with spool time as you'd have less piping to pressurize. trade off is heat soak.

on the j-bodies, i wouldn't see it as being a feasible setup but they do work pretty well for subarus. buddy of mine just made 370 whp in his sti with a force performance turbo and an upgraded top mount. spools quick too.
