shaft play in the turbo

so i bought a turbonetics turbo off of egay and it seems to be that i might have gotten screwed. it was advertised as a turbonetics to4e that was just rebuilt, all bearings, and seals, and the housing was sandblasted. all performed at a independent bmw dealer. i got it with a older blitz bov and older tial wastegate. for 305. i was thinking i got a steal! i finally get the package and the turbo has a good amount of shaft play. could this just be because there isnt any oil in it, i did not expect this much play at all. thanks for any comments!

also the center section has no turbonetics marks on it at all! just the housings. do you think i would be able to go after him for wrongly listing a item to get my money back?

turbonetics has that turbo listed as a ball bearing turbo at a price of 1100.00 if it is a ball bearing turbo then there should be no shaft play at all. ball bearing center housings cannot be rebuilt. my guess is it is a journal bearing turbo with a turbonetics wheel/housing (hybrid). if its a true turbonetics turbo then the center housing will have to be purchased. i think they run ~500.00

Is the shaft play side to side or in and out? A little side to side is normal if there is no oil in it (providing the blades don't touch the housing), but never ANY in and out.

no in and out, just side to side but you can hear metal to metal contac as you turn it. he agreed to pay 1/2 the cost of a new center section
