So I have just a general question and so far I haven't been able to find any answers on it. I have recently picked up a 95 Cavalier with a 2.3L and was looking into running some boost, more specifically a GM super charger kit. Was wondering since the kit is made for a 00+ 2.4 is there any fitment issues to a 95 2.3? I have looked at the boost threads and I would assume I would have to do all the same mods as the pre 98 2.4L. Also another thing I have come across is that everyone keeps telling me that there was a lot of issues with the 2.3L and its garbage and blah blah blah . Would it be even worth my time and effort to do anything to this motor ? and is there any major issues with the 2.3 itself or same as the 2.4s? and help and comments are greatly appreciated. thanks guys
Not sure if anybody has told you tihs yet but, there was a lot of issues with the 2.3L and its garbage and blah blah blah.
yes I realize this was in no way helpful....
yah i have been told that but no one has a reason why they are garbage? and i have also heard that about the LD9s.... so why is it garbage ???

Honestly, I know next to nothing about the 2.3, all I did was copy and paste what you said. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Someone who can actually help you will chime in here im sure.
thats what i was hoping.... except no one inputs here... i have found more help on the JCO then here so far.
There are several different 2.3L quad4's. All 94' and earlier 2.3L's share the same block (as best to my knowledge). The 95' however was a transition year for the 2.3L, which carried over to the 2.4L LD9. Because of this, the main reason people tell you it's garbage, is because it shares the same dissappointing oil pump as the LD9, which causes cavitation above ~5500 RPM. It shares the same 33mm lifters/towers/power steering pump as the 2.4L and if you have an auto, I don't believe there is any way to burn a chip for it. The lifters (35mm) and oil pump from quad4's from 94' and earlier are very common mods for 2.4L owners. Therefore, to do these mods requires the same work as it would for a 2.4L, and after all that work, you have about 1.5L less displacement, which typically means less power. Good news if you have a manual trans, though. If so, you can swap out the entire engine for a 90-94 quad4 and it's entirely plug-n-play. This gives you a better starting point for bigger mods in the future, and if you can get your hands on a 90-92 HO (or w41), you'll have the highest power stock quad4 engine as well as all of the standard mods people with 2.4L look for.
- .410" I/E cams
- 35mm lifters
- HO Intake manifold
- 94-earlier 2.3L oil pump
- 086 head (highest stock flowing head of all 2.3L and 2.4L engines)
Regarding you wanting to use the mp45 supercharger from the 2.4L, there is a difference in bolt pattern and port shape between the 2.3L and 2.4L heads And because the supercharger is all one piece (charger and intake manifold in one), this means you have to modify the supercharger in order to fit to the 2.3L head. You could have a 2.4L to 2.3L transition flange made to avoid port matching the head to the charger, but you'll likely have issues with the supercharger belt and you still have to "slot out" the middle bolts of the manifold part of the supercharger to make it fit.
In summary, the 95' 2.3L quad4 is garbage.

The 95 is a bastard engine. It is still a quad 4 but with basically no benefits of the older designed motors. It has the balance shafts/ weaker oiling system of the ld9s, and smaller cams than most older quads. Pre 95 quad 4s had head gasket/ cylinder head issues and thats why they get a bad name. Ld9s have oiling/ rod bearing issues so thats their issue.
If it were me and if your car is 5 speed I would swap in a high output quad 4 and get the HO calibration on your computer. 180 hp + factory.
Yah I have already changed my mind and im gunna do a w41 swap, you actually posted after i am currently looking in to getting one right now. till then the car sits with the 95 LD2 in it. Does anyone know what upgrades are available for the W41? figure before i put the motor in the car might as well do as much as i can lol
Hahaha. Good luck finding one. I have access to a full junkyard search system and I couldnt find one. Not saying it cant be done. Its just hard. Your main option us a turbo because the older Quad4s have the perfect rod to stroke ratio for a boost engine.
So what older quad 4 would be easy to find that would work with the turbo ?
And HO which is essentially a W41 without the cam and a different computer.
ok well thanks for the help im gunna keep an eye out for both motors and see what i come up with.

Yes my car is 5 speed dont drive anything but anymore and with the Calibration do i just use the stock computer or am i also gunna need the HO comp ?

Try here. Lots of info.
thanks i will check it out when i gain access, so far i have been granted access to the site from the administrator yet....
You dont need access to read. I hung out over there for a few weeks when I almost bought a Beretta GTZ.
Im not sure on the 95 computers. I know you can burn chips for them, but I dont know if you can pull out the eprom from an HO/ w41 and put it in the 95 comp.
I found a full HO/ 5 speed cutlass calais in the junkyard a while ago and snagged the head and cams off it. Kinda wish I would have gotten the whole motor and tranny but that would have been too much hassle.
You need a chip burned for the 95 computer. Mantapart used to sell pre-burned chips specifically for this purpose

I think you can have the W41 program burned onto the 95 Cav chip.
the older quads (the ones with the 086 head) were notoriously known for having cracking issues between the valves. weather this is caused by too large of valves with not enough surface area between them or a weak casting is up for debate.
this is one of the MAIN reasons tons of mechanics and shops hate the quad 4. because it overheated a lot and caused tons of problems. gm came out with a fix though, the 753 head, this one to my knowledge does not share the same issues. however, the exhaust ports arent as large.

Keep your 95 pcm..dont change ANYTHING electrical, you dont need to..no matter what anyone tells you.
all you need is the engine and a chip to go with it. Cavfan1 can help you with this if need be.
ok sweet thats alota help i was getting mixed info on that lol
