Alternator M62

I can't remember what thread I saw it in, but can't the LE5 alt be used inplace of the cobalt ss/sc alt (ie don't they both spin the same way?). Battery light came on last night also saw my wideband go back into start up mode (counting warm up) while driving. The wideband is what's leading me to believe it is alt and not the battery. That and the ~20,000 miles as a DD since the blower has been put on. I'm guessing the L61 alt got tired of spinning backwards.

the way the belt gets rerouted on the m62 causes the stock l61 alt to spin the opposite direction from stock. So if I replace it with a cobalt ss/sc alt it will be spinning correctly, but I thought I saw oldschool maybe mention that the LE5 alt could also be used and I feel it would be cheaper than the ss/sc alt.

um what? mine still spins the right way. Only reason to do the SS alt swap is so you can run a 5 rib belt.

Pretty sure it states in the instructions and build book that they recommend swapping alts because the l61 is designed to spin the opposite direction. Basically it comes down to the cooling fins on the alternator are spinning backwards causing it to not be able to cool as well. I'll search for a post to reference.

Its more that the brushes are worn to a certain direction and running it backwards wears it out faster. The belt goes around the alternator the opposite side making it spin backwards

well I found a good deal on an LSJ alt from a car that had 12k on it before it got totaled. Now new question I have an uninstalled L61 lightweight alt pulley anyone know if it will fit the LSJ atl?

no you can't since the crank pulley is 5 rib.

Hrm, then we need a 5 rib crank pulley that fits a crank with our same nose diameter. And a 5 rib a/c pulley.

LSJ is 6 rib, LE5 / L61 is 5 rib.

Something to keep in mind... Don't get rid of your stock alternator if you switch to the LSJ one. The LSJ alternator has a clutch in it and when spun backwards it does nothing. I found this out when I broke in my motor when it was NA and took off the charger temporarily..... battery didn't last long

Anyone ever swapped alternators after blower had been put on? Its looking like I'm gonna have to take it all off

I had 2 bad alts in a row, and you need to take the blower off, and the pulley tensioner and it comes right out with the alt spacer thingy and alt together. The first one took me a little over an hour now I can swap em out in about 30 min. Oh and put the car up on stand so you can access the bolts under the alt for the spacer bracket, otherwise your not going to be happy.
