turbo 2.4 build internals/swapping parts
Tuesday, April 19, 2011 10:40 PM
after only little over 20k on the motor i rebuilt valve snapped and took it out again so now im looking at building a built turbo motor out of it been doing alot of research on swaps with 2.3 parts now im just looking for more input from other people. i figured since i have to get new head anyways i thought of going with a 2.3 head ss valves and possible having it port and polished as well then low compression pistons so its not to high with out the turbo. i found a place to do all the head work plus oversize valves and 3 angle valve job. 2.3 ho cams if i remember right 95 intake and pre 95 exhaust but ive heard of a custom grid from crane or turbo cams anybody else know of where i could find any aftermarket cams that would work better? then for bottom im looking at forged wiseco pistons and forged eagle h beam rods but don't know if a stock crank will hold up well ive never seen a forged crank for the 2.4. any problems with any of this or just any input on better parts anything would be appreciated. mainly want to build a sleeper i love the looks u get when somebody gets beat by a cavalier

finding aftermarket 2.3 cams is harder than hell. but.. it can be done if you are dedicated enough. keep an eye out over on quad4forums.com and ebay. best bet for cams is prolly going to be just a set of straight up HO 2.3 cams. they work very well for boost.

you wont want to put oversized valves in the 2.3 head.. they are already pretty much touching each other and the head likes to crack between them as it is. intakes are already 1mm larger than LD9 and exhausts are already 2mm larger than LD9.

the stock crank has been known to handle plenty of abuse. its a very beefy unit at 41 pounds. 500+whp on stock cranks with boost all day long.

thanks that helps alot. so would it be worth doing a port and polish on the head then or will i notice much of a difference with it already being bigger then stock.

honestly not many people have swapped the 2.3 head onto a 2.4 and really had anything to brag about in terms of it being worth it. personally, i feel the LD9 head is just as good if not better than any 2.3 head when properly worked over. the 2.3 head does not like heat, it cracks a lot even on an n/a engine so one with boost is probably going to be much worse. now... with that said, having it cryotreated and then thermal barrier coated could take care of that issue and eliminate it. problem again here is lack of experimentation and implementation on our community's part.

but yes, to answer you're question... a port and polish is going to help any one of our heads, 2.4 or 2.3. the biggest gain to be had is near the valves. a superb valve and radius job with nice combustion chamber work is going to yield the best results.

the biggest draw back to the 2.4 heads is the exhaust side. it is tiny and needs enlarged. a gasket match is fine and has been known to provide excellent results, both on the flow bench as well as in the numbers.

i cannot tell you weather the 2.3 head is going to be better for you versus the 2.4 head. all i know is the best grassroots 2.3 turbo build as it stands right now is 556whp and the best grassroots turbo 2.4 build as it stands right now is 551whp. so is it really worth it? up to you...

that helps alot i guess i just seen a couple people swap on a 2.3 head and said it made a pretty big difference and mine is shot now so i figured i might as well but maybe ill just get a 2.4 with port and polish and make things simpler. thanks again

i seen u put a venom intake on one of yours did u notice much of a gain off of it i seen some people say its better to just find a 2.3 intake and use that instead. also does anybody have any kind of parts list of the 551 hp 2.4? im trying to figure out all my options for performance upgrades if im gonna put this much money into it i wanna do it so im happy with it when its done.

the venom has not been proven to be worth its weight in dog @!#$ LOL but im hopeful it can be modded to at least be improved over a stocker. if i were you id just use an extrude honed 2.3 intake.

the parts list is under brandon fetter's name. he has a build thread in photos and media right now.

you already have a turbo manifold?

havent bought anything yet just tore down the motor last week trying to find best options before i get anything. i seen his intake any idea on price for one?

not sure that venom one really showed any gains. but i know someone that has a tubular turbo manifold if you are interested.... trust me its a work of art!

ya im def. gonna be looking for one anyway you could send me some pictures and maybe a price?

the only thing the venom gains is show points right out of the box.

the inside is a mess with nasty welds, slag, and over-hanging piping. it really needs cleaned up on the inside.

thats kinda what i was hearing it was more for show then performance i seen some dyno numbers comparing the venom to brandons and his made alot better power but i didnt know if he sold them or not. id like to find a exhaust manifold like he made for the turbo too if i could

Brandon Fetter should have one that fits a turbo my size for the 2.4.... my turbo is a 57 trim t3/t4. Its one he made that he has right now that is probably for sale... its this one right here......

what you think for a price?

I THINK his manifolds are $650

alright it be a little while ive been off work on work mans comp and dont get paid much but i wanna start ordering parts slowly when i get back to work.

do i have to pull all the ac stuff out for that manifold?

im not sure, you would have to ask him on that one to be sure. i just know it was made based off my turbo since mine was used for mock up.

$675 with a wastegate flange.

That manfiold was made for my car and that is my Flickr account. Manifold is actually in my possesion.. It was made with a/c delete in mind. You can see mock up pictures in the album and see if there is clearence for a/c.

im not to worried bout ac ill pry end up pullin all of it off anyways what were u running for a turbo with that? and do you have any pictures of how you ran all of your piping?

I am going a different route so I never ran the header. It was bolted to the car and that's about it. Piping would ideally be ran underneath the car. You can clearence and fit the piping between the lower engine mount and oil pan on passenger side. Then snake the rest accordingly. Some trial and error and It's done.

I'm in the process of building a 2.3/2.4 turbo hybrid and you're on the right track with the Wiesco forged 8.5:1 pistons and Eagle rods but I would also look at swapping oilpumps to the 2.3 HO oilpump and get you block modified for it. You can use either head (2.3 HO or 2.4) just remember if you use the HO head get lower compression pistons (8.5:1) because that head has smaller chambers and will raise the cr or get 9:1 pistons if you're gonna use the 2.4 head, (I have a 2.3 head which has been modded for use with the 2.4 block and 2 2.4 heads if you're interested email me at z24.turbo@gmail.com). As far as cams go I'd run modified HOs, W41s or HG2s if you can find them I know someone who can mod any of those intake cams for the power steering hex and the cam position sensor pad (he just did my HG2 intake cam) then contact Branden Fetter for one of his sheet metal intakes and him or Atomic for an equal length turbo header.
