Just as the title states I have the opportunity to get a HC1 turbo and I hear they are similar to the HX35 but does anyone know more specs? Finding the A/R numbers on a Holeset is like finding the end of the rainbow.
HC1 is the old version of the HX35/HY35. A/R's aren't defined for Holset. Instead, the turbine housing sizes are given in cm^2. If you look, there are plenty of sites that give the equivalent A/R. The HX35 uses a 12cm^2 housing (there is an 18cm^2 housing as well). The HY35 uses a 9cm^2 housing. Just going off the top of my head, I believe...
9cm^2 = .53 A/R
12cm^2 = .70 A/R
It's been a several years since I've researched the Holsets, but I believe the HC1 also uses the same exhaust wheel and CHRA as the HX35/HY35. In any case, if you can get a good deal on one, it should make for a nice setup. Sadly, Holsets have become incredibly popular among the import crowd, and as such, it gets harder to find good deals on these.

Supposedly the exhaust housing on this is 16cm^2. I'm thinkin its too big.

if its going on the ld9 and your using a str manifold u need to do a lil moding( not to much dont worry) u need
2x t3 gaskets
1x new t3 flange(ebay)
1x vac line fitting for the turbo need to tap
need to make a feed line found that the fitting for the power sterring fitting on a 2000 impala for the radiator fits the turbo perfect( ull surch all day at homedepo and find nothing. buy a reg oil feed line off of ebay and you'll b stright.
if you dont put the t3 flange you will cause the exhaust side to touch that cam.

Thanks for the info. it looks like Im going to be going a different direction now. I found a full kit with a t3/t04e for a cavy with a 2.3 ill be purchasing. I'll be running an 086 head with my build.

You talk about it like it's some tragedy imports are using them. Bitter that the import crowd is able to pull more out of their cars en masse than the jbody clan?

I don't think He's bitter about it, I've met him in person and Whalesac comes across as modest, anyway he's been on a megasquirt for a engine management, I'm sure he could get power out of his car if he wanted to ever go turbo. I think he was just pointing out that Holsets are harder to get good deals on because people are aware of them more now then ever.

huh...
My point was that a large group of people (i.e. import crowd) have become well aware of what used to be a legitimate secret. There was a time when Cummins owners would practically give their Holsets away. I guarantee you the majority of people here have never even heard of Holset, IHI or Schwitzer/Borg Warner. They only know Garret, Turbonetics, etc, because that's what's popular with everyone. I have been preaching diesel turbos for years, but it's always fallen on deaf ears (much like my preaching about using the 2.4L reflash on an ECOTEC...and not until recently has someone actually done it). Now, there is a much higher demand for these diesel turbos and getting one for a decent price has become incredibly difficult. That's all I was saying.
Furthermore, I am one of the few people on this site that's never disrespected, looked down upon, laughed at, etc. any engine build (even the 2.2L OHV/2200). I look at everything strictly from an engineering standpoint. I could care less who melted or forged some metal into some part. You won't find any blind brand loyalty here. I dare you to find one post "in context" that proves otherwise.

^^^Tis true. I was almost given a Holset by a coworker.
