noob question?
Monday, May 23, 2011 9:06 AM
im planning on turboing my 96 2.2l sunfire i was wonderin if i need to tune my computer if i only plan to run 4 psi (just for now until i can get forged internals) my car has 200k on it but it runs strong as ever ive replaced the radiator and fuel pump and filter and lines, but i just talked to a guy who has the same engine as mine with 66k for sale for 350 bucks so im thinkin about buyin it and building it, but i just wanna know about tunning the computer?

Your computer needs tuning for ANY kind of boost...our stock tune does not read/understand boost and cannot adjust things (such as fueling) accordingly. Boost + no tune will get you a blown motor pretty quickly.

from what I've read on the 96-97 ecu swap there is a little rewiring involed, I would search the third gen forums and tuning forums for a better answer. I personally have not done it. All my J's have been 2k+ .......you could always go old school and get an afpr anf fmu for now, to dial in slightly bigger injectors...but why go through that trouble when you could do some repinning and get the job done that way.

Or....swap the entire car's harness to 2k-2k2 ln2 and computer so you can get a nice speed density tune, and you would have to make your own top feed conversion for the fuel injectors....sorry to add to your delema but if your research the options I mentioned you'll be alot more knowledgeable on your issue

my co-worker has a 99 sunfire 2200 turbo hes parting out. he wants to swap an eco engine into it. the motor is built with forged piston, eagle rods, race bearings and .020" over bore. the built motor has less than 12k miles on it. hes in tampa fl so if it needs to be shipped he can give you a deal on it. of course he will throw in the ecm and harness which will solve your tuning issues since you can use hptuners with it.

it has 9.0:1 compression forged pistons from(cavalier connection-no longer in business)
0.030" overbore
eagle rods
race bearings
1200.00 in machine work to the block in preperations for these parts including balancing of new rotoating assembly.
ported head

he wants 1500.00 and he said he will split the shipping cost. i figure shipping will be around 250-300.00.
