Turbo on a 96

Unfortunatly I have a 96 cav, been debating on a turbo. Just wondering about the fuel and timing. I know that the 96 can't be tuned, I was just curious about changing to a top feed injector and using a boost reference FPR. Then using the MR. Gasket timing key to retard the timing 2 degrees. It would only be a low boost set up no more than 8 psi. I know that its alot better to have it properly tuned but just been looking at alternatives. I've never delt with boost before always N/A with maybe a little nitrous on top.

Your 96 CAN be tuned. The 95 can't. You need to swap to top feed injectors. Then you could use Ford brown tops which are pretty cheap I bought and then sold mine for around 65 dollars. I tuned it with a vortech fmu and msd.
Also ifyou are interested I have a nearly complete turbo kit forsale in the classifieds section. It would fit your 96 quite swimmingly. 500 bones and all you will need is fuel and timing mods

Well I already have a turbo from a 99 saab, was looking at buying a log style manifold. And a friend of my was going to hook me up with a air to water intercooler (plumbs into cooling system) from his old drag car. Do you think it will be ok with the injector swap, and timing key, with the boost reference FPR?

96 CAN NOT be tuned with HPTuners. You can swap to a 97+ wiring harness and ecu so you can tune with HPTuners. 95 is ODB1 and can be tuned using a different method.

I know about swapping to a 95 and burning a new chip, or 97 and using an hptuner. At low boost how much of an issue is the factory timing? I know I need more fuel, there are ways to get that with out the computer swap. Biggest consern is the timing.

coming from as person who tunes, you have to pull some timing when boosting a non boosted motor. I know people who have ran high boost on stock timing, but I would not recommend it.

Would retarding the base timing 2 degrees with an offset key help to be safer?

Obviously swapping the ECU and using hptuners would be the best, but back when i did my setup (before HPtuners) I used an S-afc and 450cc injectors on my 96. Thats not the "best" route to go, but at the time was all there was and actually worked pretty flawlessly up to 10psi, so it is an option.

stock timing will work fine on low boost (10 psi or less). i would go with the 97+ ecm and harness with hptuners or for cheaper alternative i would go with an extra injector controller with extra injectors mounted in each intake runner.
