Ok guys when I dug my Saab stuff from the closet I looked at the exhaust side and seen this.... A slight oil residue on the turbine... Is this a bad sign? From the guy I bought this from never installed it and said it was cadw24 old turbo and I contacted Chad about it and he said it has around 30k on it. Is this bad? I hope not....
could have been a little blow by, could have been from running rich. how does it spin? only way to know is to try it out and see how it performs. or send it away to rebuild and know its right...
Oh it spins freely and very very small minute amount of play
Yep, could have been an engine issue from the previous owner as a number of things can cause oil residue on the turbine.. If shaft play feels ok and it spins smooth, toss it on and give it a spin (no pun intended). You will know pretty quickly if you have a seal issue because you will be smoking

i would rebuild/reseal it just in case. as with all used stuff you never know. it would be easier to rebuild it now instead of after you install it
mine was like this right off the saab I pulled it off. It will smoke a little when you fire it up too! don't worry after 15 miles mine has been fine for a year.
Mine had oil like that when I pulled it off once, ran it for a bit, smoked for a while then it cleared itself up.
Thanks Jason and Andy that makes me feel better about it.
mine looked like that and it ended up being 100% fine, it's the most perfect example of correct shaft play ever

Nice thanks ion
One more question on the oil feed I'm using the stock one. Do you put a washer on both sides of the line since it's a banjo bolt. Also on that little nipple on the housing do you cap that or would it be ok to run a line from that to the wastegate since it won't have vac?
Talking about the port on the bottom
Cant remember if mine had a washer under and over.
my turbo didn't have that port.. sorry
If it's a banjo bolt you need to seal both sides... 2 washers. I can't see pictures of it so I can't say definitively.

Weird was yours the Garrett or mitsu?
Copper Crush washers, and yes cap that port off on the bottom side
Yeah but on the washers do you put one on top of the line, and one on bottom?
For all that's curious the turbo is fine zero smoke on start up. Also I used the nipple on the compressor for the wastegate.

That explains it then. Mine is the Mitsubishi td-04
