2-bar map sensor....... cheaper then S/C Map
Saturday, September 04, 2004 4:04 PM
So I just picked up a 2 bar map sensor from my dad, which they use them on turbo 8.1's at his work.

I just checked GM Parts Direct for the price......... GM PART # 9359409....... GM LIST: $70.54/OUR PRICE: $35.27

Opposed to the S/C map..... GM PART # 9350899......... GM LIST: $240.16/OUR PRICE: $120.08

The only thing I noticed, is what gmpartsdirect calls the two. S/C Map = BAROMETER SENSOR, Other Map = MAP SENSOR

I also just noticed I've had the S/C map on our drag car...... and it ran fine with the '95 computer, but wouldnt run fine with the stock 2k computer program..... ?

Anyhow...... just thought I would throw that part number out there for you guys.

Should work on 2200, 2.4, and EcoTecs........ if you have a reflash/program and boost.....

What is the exact application?
My concern is that if it is a diesel application it may (and I stress may) not have negative pressure capability. Also, alot of modern diesels are running pretty high boost. So it may truly be a 2 bar sensor but its usable range would be 0-30 psi instead of the -15 to +15 used on gas engines.
Just curious.
Its a Vortec 8.1 big block gas engine (same found in Silverado and Avalanch), that they twin turboed for generator applications..... it runs 2 small turbos, and is rev. limited to about 3.5-4k rpm..... (peak torque) The motors are stock except for a special cam from GM, and that they run on bi-fuel (not diesel).

I should sneek some pics of some of the stuff at his work........ HUGE turbo's, HUGE intercoolers...... all kinds of crazy stuff.

So a s/c 2 bar will run on a stock 95 computer? Know if it will run on the OBD2 version on the 95 computer?
This is the part number for a standard 1 BAR sensor. You can find this number by looking for a MAP sensor for almost any 96 and newer vehicle so equipped.

If those turbo 8.1's are using a MAF sensor, that's probably how they're controlling the fuel. Since generators are usually run within a narrow RPM range, it's possible that the timing (usually controlled by MAP) is just set for very low amounts of advance.

They are not using a MAF sensor on them (Mass Air Flow), just the MAP sensor. I've seen the programing they use, and the map does read boost....... and does correct for the boost....... changing the Spark and Fuel maps....... unless thier as smart as RSM, and can make a 1 bar read boost.......... I'd have to say they are 2 bar maps.

The only app. I can find it listed for is the N/A 3.8 MFI engine....... which doesnt mean its not a 2 bar capable MAP.......

I did learn the 2.3 computer doesnt like the 2.4 map sensor...... but it does like the S/C 2.4 map senor.

16254539 is the part number for the S/C 3800 engine........ but I dont have a price on that one......

quick question... when Gm says 1 bar... does that mean vacuum to atmosphere? so like.. -20psi to 0psi? and then the 2 bar would be up to 14.7psi ABOVE atmosphere meaning a true 29.4psi but a boosted 14.7psi?

www.acdelco.com-->parts catalog-->competitive cross reference-->enter part number 9359409, click "find parts"-->select 213-796 Sensor,MAP-->find usage

search results: 867 vehicles

Looks like Delco standardized several part numbers into one common number. Which means they have to match in specification. I can verify in service information that many of the 867 vehicles in the list have 1 bar sensors. Not tryin to be a prick, just trying to figure out some part numbers.

The sensor from the 3.8 supercharged is the large square style sensor. gmpartsdirect lists 16006835 for an 89 Sunbird turbo. This might be worth checking. gmpd pricing is about $38.00. I know that the current part listed for the turbo 'bird is the same as the 6.5 turbo diesel. It may be found cheaper as AC Delco 213-1520

9350899 (from the GM S/C kit) is originally used on the Duramax turbo diesel. It's also used on the Topkick/ Kodiak series trucks in '04 and '05. It may be found as an AC Delco 213-951.

Then there's the old style 3-bar sensor, good for almost 30 psi boost, part number 16040749 (ACD 213-101). Gmpd pricing is $51.31 with a note that the sensor is no longer in stock. The replacement sensor is part number 12223861 (ACD 213-1562) as listed on the box on my desktop and is priced at $52.75 I'd order the old one and see what happens. : ) I have yet to find a part number for a GM 4 bar sensor.

That is a 1 bar MAP. I have bought and tested one and it will not work with the reflash. Just to clear things up. There is an attachment of the blueprint for this map. Only premiums can see the attachment.

Thanks for testing it out for me, I have one here, just no s/c reflash cars in the area...... at least for long enough for me to test it. I asked my dad about it, and he still says its the one they use on the Turbo 8.1s to sense boost pressure.

Hey guys,
back to this again.. Derek z24 said that msd 2312 will work with the reflash.. anybody esle have input on that? Heres the link to that post. Also, the just cut and attached the 2.2l map sensor connector to make it work.

I thought the 8.1l turbo truck Brian was talking about wasWAS a duramax
turbo diesel.? Which turns out to be a 1 bar map sensor.

The 8.1 is the Big Block Vortec motor (GAS)....... not the Duramax......

2nd and 3rd posts in this thread address that.

the duramax is a 6.6 L

Re: 2-bar map sensor....... cheaper then S/C Map

And the Duramax sensor, like the older 6.5L turbo diesel sensor, is a 2 BAR unit capable of reading from about 20 kPa to 200 kPa absolute pressure.

Hi, I am curious will that Chevy Silverado Map Sensor work on my 97 Cavalier 2.4L Supercharger without the flash ? Cause I swap in my Supercharger in my 97 Cavalier 2.4L. So that way I can get more boost. Will that work ? Let me know if that works.
Re: 2-bar map sensor....... cheaper then S/C Map

A MAP sensor will not "get more boost". If your program is not set up for a 2 bar sensor then you should not be running a 2 bar sensor.
