How much of a difference is there with no cat while running a turbo. Does it get really loud or does the turbo cause enough restriction to keep the sound down. I am also wondering if the exhaust smells really bad without it because If the police find out there is no cat they are probably going to be pretty pissed. I really don't need that
it will sound like a semi basically. depending on how much boost you are running and how much power you want to put down, you can either run 2.5 or 3 inch piping. i'd recommend 2.5" turbo back piping with a test pipe. what i would honestly do is run your restrictive exhaust and get one of the boost activated cutouts.
here is the thread on the boost activated cutout

Also, it will put a check engine light on.
^^^O2 simulator eliminates the check engine light

run 3" all the way back..it will prolly be loud when you get on it, most of my buddies with 3" turbo back arent that loud. my magnaflow catback is louder

it'll be very loud when the waste gate opens up
I suppose a series of 3" resonator's could make it sound better, haha.
has anyone tried those boost activated cutouts yet?
I'd really like to try this out.

all I need to know is if the cops will be able to tell if it is in or not, the cops in winnipeg are real @!#$s and they would love to fine me for that if they could.
it will smell funky, and sound funky. if you don't want to deal with cops, get the boost-activated cutout thing. and just make sure cops around around when you hit boost.

if u wanted not cat but didnt want to get busted, drop the cat down and just hallow it out on the top portion of the cat and the weld the top back and put it back on. no cel will come on or nething and it looks like it is still there to the cops.

or a high flow cat.

3inch exhaust with no cat versus 3inch exhaust with a high flow cat resulted in less than a 10-15hp difference on a 540hp T4 powered 1.8T... Does a J have a 1.8T? No, but the same principle will apply. On a car making about 200-250 hp, the difference will only be about 2-5 hp, if that. No real point in not running a cat, especially if you life in a Severe Non-Attainment Area emissions-wise. Just switch to a high flow cat from summit or your performance parts place of choice. If you live somewhere where they don't do emissions checks, then hell, have at it, but for the added hassle, the gain just isn't worth it if you need your car to pass inspection.
