ATP VES Exhaust Diverter
ran across the ATP link in another thread and was checking out the site and found this. what do you all think of it? seems like it could be a decent alternative to having to get a full 3 inch exhaust and such. ideas, ideas, throw them out here. let me know what you all think. later.

Thats not a bad idea. Especially for a street/daily driven boosted car.
Different., but I can get me a 3 inch exhaust done for that actually less.

evidently the idea behind this product is that you can keep the stock or slightly larger, but yet restrictive exhaust on their compared to a full 3 inch catback or turbo back exhaust for non boost driving. then put this on and as boost starts coming on, this opens up to release the gases. a boost activated cutout, versus an electrical or manual one. if you have the stock exhaust on, then no excessive noise at startup, idle, cruising, etc. but when you floor it, well...you get the picture.

i'm wondering, does the flap open fully as soon as you hit boost or does it open slowly depending on how much boost? i don't think it would do that because how does it know what your full boost is set at... but i just figured i thought i'd ask.

if you look on the product, it has what looks like a wastegate. because, the site talks about hooking up a boost controller to control when the flap opens. or just even completely turning the wastegate part off, so the flap opens at the very onset of boost. or at least thats what i understand from reading the site info about that product.

the part that looks like a wastegate is how it detects boost and tells the flap to open. integrating your boost controller is only good for leaving it open all the time or closed all the time.

Integrate a boost controller to control when the valve opens or completely turn it off.

ok so i guess you could integrate the flap to open at 6 psi instead of 0.1

I understand what it is for. I'm saying a 3 inch exhaust ona boosted car is actually not as loud as my 2:50 n/a car. now at WOT it will be louder. Boosted car tend to be nice sounding at normal driving. I'm saying me I will go the chaeper route with a full 3 inch exhaust instead of this, and hooking this and that up is all. This product would be good for some people not me.

I have one of these on my 2000 Beetle 1.8T. I've never tried it on lower boost but at 20 psi it opens almost immediately when i hit the throttle. I have it tapped into the wastegate line between the charge pipe and my MBC, so as the MBC is keeping boost from reaching the wastegate, it is also helping to open the VES sooner. Loud as hell and it works great. I don't know if you need to or not, but I put mine up on a lift at work once or twice a month and give all the moving parts a good spray down with penetrating oil just to keep everything in working order. So far its been on a few months and I haven't had any issues.
Just note that at idle, no dump valve or cutout will ever totally seal so you will get that annoying exhaust leak sound, and potentially get some amount of exhaust fumes in the cabin, unless you have a pipe routed off of the VES to direct the exhaust somewhere else.

so if your MBC is keeping boost from reaching the wastegate, how do keep an accurate measure of actual boost?

with a boost guage.....u dont hook your guage up on the line from your MBC to your WG.....and in very simple terms, thats how an MBC works....allows the WG to see less boost then is actually being made.

My boost/vacuum gauge is plumbed into my fuel pressure regulator line, which gets its boost supply from a fitting in the intake manifold, way downstream of where the wastegate line connects to boost.
You know, not to be a jerk, but maybe before you go making statements about how a product should or shouldn't work, you should actually know something about the parts involved.
An MBC works by keeping the wastegate from seeing any boost until the boost pressure is high enough to open push past the spring loaded ball in the MBC, which then will open this wastegate. Then the wastegate opens and drops the boost until its just under the set point of the MBC, and the cycle starts over. This is how the MBC increases boost level. Now the way i have mine rigged up, the MBC is not controlling the VES, its just in a position where the boost that backs up behind the MBC while it is depriving the wastegate of boost will be forced into the VES supply line.
The VES starts to open at the very onset of boost, and I believe its fully open by about 6 psi or so. To be honest the tiny K03 turbo on my car spools so fast that I've never been able to get a really good estimate. But if you were to put another MBC in the line between your boost source and the VES, then the VES won't get any boost signal until the MBC opens. So if you set the second MBC at 15 psi, the VES will not open until 15psi, but will open instantly since it is seeing full boost with no gradual buildup. This would be good for the street since its really hard to merge into traffic without hitting boost and most police i'm sure would take an added interest in a car that makes as much noise as a car does with an open VES.

Jay, I'm curious as to what u all have done to your 1.8. I have 1 in my jetta.....but the car is as unbasterdised as it gets.....its the wifes car, so i want to leave it alone for a while yet. Just curious.

russ, all of my mods i believe are in my profile. If you do a little research on Vortex, making these suckers a helluva lot faster than stock is cheap. I increased the boost, did the exhaust, and almost all of the basic bolt ons for less than $800, which is what most people pay for a chip alone. I just finished putting in the stage one clutch and flywheel, and the better K03 sport turbo, so hopefully once the clutch is broken in i'll get a decen track day to see what kind of difference this weekend's work made.
